Check out the home pages of Italy’s (population 59m and bigger than England) biggest newspapers, Jannik Sinner’s victory has totally consumed them, huge coverage and no doubt a lot of celebrations (daytime Sunday there).
I also remember the hype and reaction back home in Serbia when Novak Djokovic won his first Major here in 2008. There were similar scenes after Ana Ivanovic won the French Open in the same year.
I predict a bright future for Jannik Sinner from now on,hope he can continue to knock Djokovic out of future Grand Slam finals ,the reign of the ‘Big 3 ‘ is finally over.Long time tennis nuts like myself have been waiting a long time for this .Congrats to Sinner again
Obviously many learnings for Sinner also. Really need to have a look at those first few sets and see what went wrong. He was lucky his opponent was getting fatigued, some others might have proven not so much.
I think Medvedev knew he needed to get it done in 3 and didn’t have the energy to go 5, so lifted big time and started ferociously.
Sinner obviously took a while to get comfortable given the way Medi was playing and gave him some chances for sure.
It was more of a show court as opposed to an actual arena up until said year, after which redevelopment works commenced to convert it into a true arena with a retractable roof. This redevelopment was completed in 2015.
Whereas Nine did show the women’s final live. However, it was the preceding semi between Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters that became notable for all the wrong reasons, wherein Williams blew up at the line judge and/or umpire towards the end of the match.
That 2009 US Open men’s final was notable in which Juan Martin del Potro:
became the first man other than Rafael Nadal to beat Roger Federer in a major final;
became the first man to beat both Nadal and Federer at a Major (Novak Djokovic would do the same at the 2011 US Open);
prevented Federer from winning a sixth straight US Open title, and also ended his 40-match winning streak at Flushing Meadows; and
became the first Argentine to win a Major singles title since Gaston Gaudio won the French Open in 2004.
Further:
it was the only Major final that Federer lost after leading by two sets to one;
he never won the US Open again, though did reach the final in 2015 where he lost to Djokovic;
it was the only Major where Federer, Nadal and Djokovic all reached the semis, but none of them won; and
no man has been able to defend a US Open singles title since.
