Why do they need to say it would compete with Australia’s Grand Slam event? They can just run theirs at some time in between other Grand Slams.

We have the French Open in May/June, Wimledon in July snd the US Open in August/September. The Australian Open is in January so there would be room for another event between these big events.

If it was embraced by the ATP then the suggestion is that the tournament would be scheduled with respect to other events.

If the ATP is hostile towards a Saudi backed event (ie. PGA vs LIV) then there is strong incentive for them to schedule it against Australia’s summer of tennis.

Probably because the tournament could be anything, and there’s always a chance it would run alongside the Aus open or very close to it. The truth is money talks. Tbh though I’m not sure it would work very well at least in the short term.

From little things, big things grow. It could become big down the track if done right. One concern would be that the tennis players themselves may suffer burnout faster if they compete in more tournaments.

TBH a lot of them are prone to it now as the full tennis schedule is ridiculous It’s literally a tournament a week then on top of that you have Grand Slams, and the bigger tournaments. There’s only a 4 week window with nothing on in December. So the players have to plan the year out and be smart about how they go about it.

I was lucky to see some big names playing today including Aryna Sabalenka,Naomi Osaka who was knocked out by a former Brisbane International champion,Karolina Plishkova. And Aussie Alexei Popyryn who unfortunately was beaten today.
Go Demon👍I’ve just watch him beat Djoker(on TV)

To be honest, DeMinaur has been around for a while now and it will take more than one win like this to sustain interest in him.

Like for him to go deep in the Australian Open, make the final eight at least.

He gave me Kyrgios / Tomic vibes.

I’d much rather Demon vibes.

DeMinaur and Rafter are probably the only widely liked successful male tennis players AUS has produced in the last 30 years.

Hewitt, Tomic and Kyrgios down near the bottom of the heap for me in terms of sportsmanship.

Our women’s tennis players however, are generally much nicer.

Is it something in our beer?

Fair enough, there’d be many who agree with you, Hewitt-esque, but theres very different fans/sides, we know Kyrgios has a legion and draws in the viewers easier (even if most hate his sudden temperament change/antics), while there’d be a lot who admire that never give up, fight to the death, true blue aussie flare of your de Minaur (even without the colour, fanfare or exciting showy skills on court)

I think that’s a bit harsh, I know what you’re referring to, but he definitely mellowed and absolutely had that fighting Aussie spirit, cannot really compre him exactly to Kyrgios and especially Tomic

Agree that Hewitt is the most likable of that trio, but still behind others for sportsmanship.

Disappointing result for Rinky Hijikata today, expected much better, but to be fair Grigor Dimitrov was on another level, plays very well in Brisbane

He is not getting anywhere near number 1 if he can’t win anything above a 500 tournament or get past the QFs of slams.

Alex Probably has the best chance of doing both these at the moment.

Jordan Thompson beat Rafa Nadal 5-7 7-6 6-3 tonight at Brisbane.

He’ll play Grigor Dimitrov for a spot in the final.

Good luck Jordan!
