Ten (WIN)

Yeah - I’ve never seen anything actually written to effect this “opt out for local news only” rule- especially as in practice it’s also a timeshift of their afternoon programming to free up the 5:30pm slot. I can understand that advertisers might want to have the Brisbane stations limit opt-out advertising, but that surely isn’t the role of a regulator to enforce.

Still even if it is a thing - Ten don’t utilise it on the Gold Coast, so really have no barrier to shutting down the excess simulcasts. WIN rightly never bothered adding the extra NRN Central Coast transmitter, when it’s identical coverage to TEN.

Network 10 To Acquire WIN Network’s Northern New South Wales Television Licence.

Network 10 has signed an agreement for the acquisition of WIN Network’s (WIN) Northern New South Wales television licence.

Network 10 will commence operating the licence from the completion of the sale. The acquisition of the licence ensures Network 10’s premium content and channels (10, 10 Bold DRAMA and 10 Peach COMEDY) will continue to be broadcast into Newcastle, Taree, Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Lismore, Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast.

The production and broadcast of local news updates in the Northern Rivers, Tamworth, Taree, Newcastle and Gold Coast will remain, continuing the long-standing commitment to providing local content, news, events, sport and a local voice for the region.

Network 10’s acquisition of the television licence, as well as equipment and associated contracts is subject to customary sale conditions, including regulatory approval and due diligence, and will take effect once these have been completed.

Network 10 announced in December 2024 that it had signed an agreement for the acquisition of Southern Cross Media Group Limited’s (SCA) television licences in Queensland, southern New South Wales and Victoria. The addition of WIN’s Northern New South Wales television licence will complete the distribution of Network 10 into critical and highly populated regional markets.

Beverley McGarvey, President Network 10, Head of Streaming and Regional Lead Paramount Australia, said: “The acquisition of WIN’s Northern New South Wales television licence ensures that our premium line up of entertainment, news and sport content continues to be available to all Australians, while also offering our commercial and advertising partners a national footprint.

“This further reinforces Paramount Global’s (parent company of Network 10 and Paramount+) commitment to the Australian market and in particular Network 10.”

Andrew Lancaster, CEO of the WIN Corporation said: “WIN’s strategic focus is on Nine and it no longer makes sense for us to own the 10 Northern NSW business. As an industry we should be looking to make the buying of advertising easier for our clients and this transaction should help do that.”

No other details of the acquisition will be released.

So we won’t get an acquisition price? Interesting

Could this be a possible indication that the station has decreased in value and WIN don’t want to publicise they sold it at a loss?

I’m tipping $0 at worst, low-mid 7 figures most likely, low 8 figures very optimistic.

I wonder if Nickelodeon will launch in those areas eventually.

Will be interesting to see how 10 handle news updates for these regions.

Interestingly it’s not mentioned in the list of channels in the press release

This is interesting.

TV Blackbox understands from someone familiar with the deal that Network 10 has agreed to pay approximately $7 million for WIN’s Northern NSW licence, including some real estate and transmitters, though the final payment is expected to be minimal as it is tied to future earnings, which 10 would likely value at zero.

So 10 now outrightly owns their QLD, NSW & VIC affiliates.
For better or worse I guess.
Does this mean WIN News is gone?

WIN News continues where WIN is affiliated with Nine

If that number is close to the mark, explains why they don’t want to talk about it!

Wonder what property is included - wouldn’t have thought it would be much at all

Neither deal has been finalised yet.

From memory, I think WIN paid $55 mil for it?

Correct, in 2017.

The new arrangement sees WIN hand over $45m for the TV assets up front and a further $10m one year later.

The above news means that Northern NSW would become the first regional aggregated market to have all three commercial networks being O&Os (Owned & Operated).

Should mean it gets called “NO&Othern NSW” in this forum now!

could they outsource the news updates back to WIN?

They could utilse the WIN newsrooms for 10 News Local updates & opt-outs, enhancing their local product and getting more news for the regions across NSW for both SCA & WIN markets.

There is another Question, WIN Handle direct sales for NBN-9 in Northern NSW. What will happen there now?
