I was in Gold Coast recently and LCN 5 is now HD only. SD is gone.

Yes, but the MPEG-4 upgrade didn’t affect the MPEG-2 SD primary as far as we knew. Can’t be long now for the remaining markets to follow.

Gordon’s regional TV company WIN has progressed talks over the sale of its northern NSW TV licence to Network 10, according to people familiar with the situation speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential matter.
The parties are still working through details of an agreement, one of the sources said, and a timeline remains unclear, but there is growing confidence a deal will be done.

if this happens it will mean that the “regional” stations on the Gold Coast will have the same owners as the “Brisbane” stations transmitting there. Will this mean that they will eliminate the duplicate “Brisbane” licenses and have just three stations on Qld time, programmes relayed from Brisbane but with separate ads as a Gold Coast feed? Makes sense to me!

Maybe, but AFAIK Nine and Seven haven’t done it where they have overlaps between O&O stations overlapping across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

As far as I can tell there is no provision to allow this to occur, but if I was lining up to ask for changes, I’d be dropping this one in as a potential quick win (even if you had to give some guarantee for local content)

Separate ads for the same programs from Brisbane isn’t allowed. There is only a minor exception made for the 30 minute local news on QTQ’s replay.

Is there anywhere on the Gold Coast that can’t get the Brisbane channels?
Conversely, do any of the Gold Coast channels reach any part of northern NSW? As in NRN, NBN and NEN, not the Brisbane channels on relay.
Pretty much everywhere on the Coast gets all six commercial channels.
Could be some areas up in the Hinterland that might only get Brisbane from Mt Coot-tha
Only along the coatal fringe and only as far as Pottsville at best.
Could they run local ads on the NBN, NEN, NRN licences though? They’d probably also swap over to Brisbane news if they shut down the Brisbane relay licenses.
Maybe a small trade off with LCNs though with this approach.

Agree this is likely to happen at some point if all three metro / regional networks each have the same owner.
Motivation will be to reduce transmission expenses eg each only operate one signal instead of two.

Only places that can’t get a QLD signal are where there are no signals like at the bottom of some hinterland valleys.
Everyone in QLD should be able to get a signal from a QLD transmitter - SE Brisbane, Currumbin, Hinterland or Mt Tamborine.
Likewise, except for a handful of unusual cases, no-one in NSW needs to rely on a QLD transmitter. They should all be able to get a signal from a NSW site.
Lots in NSW down along the coast to Kingscliff have antennas for the Gold Coast, but they could also receive Mt Nardi if they tried.
Note that the Spingbook site transmits 13 stations - 5 towards NSW (Murwillumbah) and 8 towards QLD.

And i think they are very directional, so there is pretty much nowhere where you can get all 13 stations.

Oh and I meant to add the same thing could happen on the NSW Central Coast too with signals being combined.

I stayed in Palm Beach recently and the NSW stations were tuned in on the hotel TV in the 350+ LCN range along with the overwhelming suite of Gold Coast and Brisbane channels.
Admittedly it clearly was fortuitous reception of the NSW channels as they were pixelling out occasionally. But I assume that far down south on the Gold Coast you could get permanent reception if you wanted.

Yes, the high powered Mt Nardi signals from near Lismore have good reception on most of the Gold Coast, up to around Southport at least.
I had flawless reception with a pair of rabbit ears in Surfers Paradise, though i had a good line of sight to the south/ south west and was 32 floors up.

What provision exists to stop split signals within the same licence area to allow separate ads? All the regionals do it now? And in some cases have split their signals into further sub-regions.
