Ten Sport

I wonder how Ten is going to air the delayed highlights of the Belgium Grand Prix. Is it worth really airing 40 minutes of rain delays.

Oh those were the days! Great idea, just screwed over. miss oneHD ahead of its times, just needed a few more sports to make it bigger.

OneHD launched too early and was ahead of times

Sorry, but I disagree. I actually believe One HD launched at just the right time, tbh. It launched during a time when most people had upgraded to digital-tv and the transition to HD broadcasting was mostly complete, but it was before streaming services took off (so viewership numbers weren’t as diluted).

A 24/7 FTA sports channel wouldn’t work nowadays due to the dwindling ratings for free-to-air across the board and the likes of streaming services such as Kayo, Paramount+ etc. offering sport of their own. If One HD had of launched after say, 2012, it never would have been viable long-term.

No one watches sport on free to air, as we see during the Olympics and AFL/NRL Grand Finals.

Oh.

The FTA networks wouldn’t pays millions for broadcasting rights just so that they can air the content on a multichannel, for starters.

You know exactly what i’m saying, there’s no need to be rude to me.

Except where they do. Seven did just that with the Paralympics, and does so with most AFL matches outside of Melbourne. Nine does it with the NRL outside of Sydney and Brisbane.

If challenging an assertion you’ve made is ‘rude’, I might as well bow out of the forums now.

What do you suppose they would air on a 24/7 sports channel when the Olympics and Grand Finals aren’t on? I don’t see the FTA networks acquiring the broadcast rights to every single AFL and NRL match, and they’re not in a financial position to even consider doing so.

Come off it mate, you were clearly being sarcastic. I wasn’t born yesterday.

I apologise for offending you by using sarcasm.

Ask Fox Sports - they’ve got six of them.

You’re right, the FTA networks wouldn’t be able to acquire the broadcast rights to the “drawcard” sports anyway, Fox hold the rights to the other AFL and NRL matches. So you’ve just illustrated my point as for why a 24/7 sports channel on FTA would no longer be viable. Nice try.

You’re getting quite defensive over a post where you suggested wrongly that free-to-air ratings are the reason a 24/7 sports channel isn’t viable.

Many of the points you raise are definitely real world stumbling blocks, don’t get me wrong. But in the context of hypothetical FTA coverage, the ratings for exclusive coverage (as seen with the Olympics, much to my own surprise) completely disagree with you.

Indeed there’s a lot of special programming and replays to fill the not insignificant gaps between live coverage on Fox Footy, League & Cricket.

As for whether one of the FTA networks could still make a sports channel work nowadays, I’d probably be keeping my eyes on Stan Sports as that has the potential to become a linear channel (whether via traditional means or online streaming) in the near future.

The FTA networks are no longer in a position where they can freely choose what they can or can’t air. They’re having to compete with streaming services such as Netflix, Stan etc., and sport has proven to be one of the few formats (besides the news and reality-TV) which continues to draw viewers to watch free-to-air.

If they paid hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire the broadcast rights to air one sport, why would they only air the matches on a 24/7 sports multichannel and not on the main channel? What would they air on the main channel instead? There’s a reason why the networks choose not to air their primetime reality shows on Friday and Saturday nights. They’re low rating rights.

For instance, Ten paid $200m to secure the broadcast rights for the A-League, Soccerroos and Matildas, and despite paying all that money to secure the rights to those, they’re only airing one A-League and one W-League match on free-to-air each week. Airing the rest of the matches on a 24/7 sports channel would have made sense back in 2009, when One HD launched, but why would they do so now when streaming is the main means in which people watch their favourite shows?

Grand Finals and Olympics receive big ratings, but they’re one-off events and not held regularly. You need big, drawcard sports to ‘grab’ eyeballs and encourage people to watch the rest of the schedule (on the 24/7 sports channel) when those events aren’t on, otherwise it just makes the whole venture unviable.

That would have been viable 10+ years ago when streaming services hadn’t taken off yet, but how many people would still be setting a recording or tuning-in to watch a sports replay on free-to-air (when in most cases, they’re readily accessible on a streaming service)? Optus Sports offers mini-matches and highlights, in addition to the replays of full matches, for instance.

I would love to see a sports channel on free-to-air, but i’m just not convinced that the FTA networks are in a financial position where they could make it a viable venture. Ten could have launched a “10 Football” free-to-air channel since they have the rights to the national teams, AFC and A-League/W-League, for instance, but they haven’t.

I don’t expect you to respond though. You clearly have a grudge of some sort against me, it has been blatantly obvious for the past three weeks or so.

right, enough.

Which is why in recent years, we’ve seen the commercial FTA networks actively make decisions to pick up reality franchises their rivals have dropped?

Sure, there’ll most likely come a point in the medium-distant future where Seven, Nine & Ten can no longer rely on sports coverage or even reality programming, as both the major sporting bodies and leading program production companies are likely to eventually bypass the networks in favour of opening up their own streaming services. When that happens, it’ll certainly be fascinating to see what Seven, Nine and Ten do in order to keep themselves relevant with the Australian public.

However, in 2021 going on 2022 I’m still reasonably sure the FTA networks can make active decisions as to what they can and can’t air…provided they remain within various regulatory boundaries, of course.

I don’t have a grudge against you. Although bizarrely, you seem to have problems with opinions which don’t align with your own.

Anyway, like @OnAir I’ve had enough of this conversation so I’m going to leave it there.

You are aware that Nine owns Stan, ten paramount, which means they are able to bid higher, put a price on sport and be a direct competitor to fox.

The ratings when a network has sole rights shows that a network can smash it out the park, SOO, Olympics etc.

As streaming and more rights come up, the sports will be spread across more platforms, not just fox. Sharing of rights will be a thing of the past, eg nine entertainment, via its platforms could have exclusive deals; as they do now. Ten the same, with the round ball. This will grow as FTA will see a benefit to their overall growth.

Fox is changing, with the freebies on Kayo and will have to expand to grow their own offerings.

Will it mean a FTA sports channel again, doubtful, as money is now in streaming. oneHD was when Ten had some big sports and was growing, where it would be now if it kept its plan together; well I’ll need a crystal ball.

That’s a shame! Quarters is great! Also appears Peter Moody is focusing on training and won’t be part of the coverage. Other than that, it appears most of the broadcast team are back!
