It’s good to read that the NBL is going back to Ten.
10Peach double matches? No more 1990’s sitcom repeats then? lol. At least its not content for that channel. Its good having both games on the one channel, rather than forcing to change between games.
Sundays in the near future:
10: travel and cooking “infomercials”
10 Bold: W-League
10 Peach: NBL
10 Shake: who knows! lol
it is a downgrade from when SBS had it: Saturday arvo and Sunday matches (and all finals) live and free in HD on SBS Viceland, and every game streamed live in HD on SBS On Demand. Now its two games on Sunday afternoon live and free in spectacular SD on 10 Peach, and if you want to see NBL in HD and see all the games you need ESPN or Kayo. And expect ad breaks in all timeouts on both ESPN and 10 Peach.
It has been on Wikipedia for quite some time now that NBL was listed for Peach. They have Lachy Reid as part of NBL TV team and he has been there for quite a long time I think. Surely 10 would have some say in commentary, the likes of Billy Woods and Steve Carfino (what is he up to these days)
It seems like they might be able to include a few of their commentators/presenters/hosts into the NBL TV team? Similar to how Supercars run?
Even if they cannot get a say surely they would be able to make sure Lachy commentates the Sunday double header? Steven Quartermain commentated when they had the rights in the 90s so hopefully he is included again! I expect a 10 personality such Natalie Yoannidis, Caty Price, Nick Butler could be a host/courtside presenter?
For reference, this was their commentary team last season for the NBL: Damian Martin, Andrew Gaze, Corey Williams, Shane Heal, Liam Santamaria, Brad Rosen, Shawn Redhage, Cam Tragardh, Peter Hooley, Dwayne Russell, John Casey, Lachy Reid, Matt Russell, Jack Heverin, Jenni Screen, Neroli Meadows, Louise Ransome, Jo Healy, Cam Luke and Jon Guarna. Gaze and Heal were part of 10’s commentary team in the early 2010s.
Hasn’t seemed to be the big fanfare like we saw when the soccer rights were announced to go with 10. Also should be noted this is the longest FTA broadcast deal for the NBL since 10 last had the rights from 2010-2015!
Fox Sports have the FIBA (International) rights until after the Asia Cup which was supposed to be taking place this month, but has been delayed to July next year.
I can see the men’s and women’s World Cups being a good gets both being in good timezones for us, although it’s a lot of content in a short time to commit to, Australia playing up to 8 games (92 games in total) in 17 days for men and up to 8 games (38 total) in 10 days for women.
Asian competitions (such as the Asia Cup and World Cup Qualfyiers) are normally bloodbaths when Australia (and we only send teams of NBL/WNBL players normally) is involved (although the Opals have competition now in Japan and China now)
Look this is a very minor sports deal and just provides them with 4 hours of Australian content on Sunday afternoons for very little outlay and production costs. It’s good but not amazing and won’t rate very well but at least it’s there. Hopefully they promote it somewhere but it isn’t a full rights suite like the soccer was.
