One Week at a Time and The Game Plan would be worth watching. Plus relaunch Sports Tonight with emphasis on Rugby League.
Call it League Tonight?.
Good idea. League Tonight similar to NRL 360 during the NRL season. And for Origin, Origin Tonight.
Matt White said on SEN today that he highly doubts Ten are interested in the NRL or any other sports rights because of their US owners. Andrew Webster replied to his knowledge all 16 clubs have been told of Tenâs genuine interest in the NRL rights.
So who really knows. Buzz Rothfield said last week that Ten and Seven are working out formal offers for the rights.
They are UK controlled, so I doubt he knows what he is talking about.
I wouldnât be surprised if, especially a few years ago when 10 lost out for a second time around 2015 (after 2011), that they truly believed theyâd just never get AFL or NRL rights, as then it was still seen as a vital product for Seven and Nine and had by then both aired those respective codes for a considerable time.
But now, as the TV environment has dramatically deteriorated, advertising plummeted, sports rights have continued to be astonomically high, as weâve seen Seven and Nine âwalk awayâ from (or put that perception out there) from once untouchable products, like tennis, cricket, horse racing and now possibly NRL.
Putting 10 in perhaps a good position to really bid well (maybe with Seven?) and nab NRL rights, see if they can make it work, get ratings higher again, a new era for it? Just my two cents
They need to do it without the simulcast on a payTV provider. Thatâs where the commercial channels are losing money, so they either stump up the cash or have a situation like seven with cricket.
If 10(ten) pick it up, itâs a good win for them.
Any links to Matt White & Andrew Webster or even Buzz.
It would be here:
10âs only premium sport offerings are the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the Australian F1 Grand Prix.
Getting the NRL rights from 9 for the first time in 30 years will be new era to the sport.
Maybe Matt White is still salty with Ch 10?
However:
How could Ten entice Seven to end their contract early?
Has Viacom finally woken up to the fact that in Australia for a FTA network to survive it has to have some sport??
Just going for the wrong sport.
Correct.
Theyâre probably of the view with horse racing it gives them 5 hours of live content once a week in a Saturday and give. The broadcast infrastructure through tabcorp is already there then they can acquire it cheaply and slap sponsors on everything to make money back.
I thought 10 disproved that with Iâm A Celebrity?
And howâs that working for them now? Itâs all good and well in non ratings, summer when people want something easy to watch with kids.
But when it comes to the crunch, it doesnât hold up the rest of the year.
I was providing an example.
What about Nine with NRL, doing nothing much in terms of ratings (except bringing in some cash), but Nine are able to dominate the year with their other reality shows and the like. Another example and probably not a good one in Nineâs eyes either.
Would just be a simulcast of Sky TC on a digital channel.
10 wants the NSW horse racing rights so there will be no more clashes between The Golden Eagle and Victoria Derby.
But why should 10 bother if (according to SMH) all it will do is simulcast Sky Racing one day each week. Sevenâs horse racing coverage works because it has recruited trainers and jockeys (current and former) to provide expert comments and tips.
The simple answer would be to buy out their contract
The longer answer is Seven probably wouldnât be open to such an approach when it would a) Leave a massive hole in their horse racing coverage and b) See the rights go to a rival network (even if all they would be doing is simulcasting Sky Thoroughbred Central)
I wouldnât be surprised if the way the negotiations have gone is 10 (and apparently Nine as well) initially wanted to pick up the rights to the Autumn/Spring Carnival races Seven currently shows but then Racing NSW/Sky (considering the Saturday FTA contractual requirement the latter has) pushed to have 10 show Skyâs coverage every Saturday on one of their multichannels.
To be honest, the proposed arrangement doesnât make much sense for either party. Yes, it would result in NSW racing being shown on FTA every Saturday. However, the casual racing/sports viewer are only interested in the âbigâ races such as the Golden Slipper and The Everest. They donât care about (let alone are going to watch) a âregularâ raceday which happens in the middle of say July. As such, the ratings a lot of those Saturday Sky simulcasts would get will probably be lower than what 10 Bold (itâs the most logical place for the simulcasts to air on) currently shows.
Another aspect is that unless thereâll be a requirement for Skyâs coverage of the major race days to air on 10âs main channel, far less people will be watching âbigâ NSW races if theyâre âhiddenâ on a multichannel and 10 has no incentive to promote those broadcasts considering the coverage is a Sky Racing simulcast. Itâll be a repeat of how their A-League rights deal a few years ago played out when Fox Sportsâ coverage of Saturday night games and the A-League Finals were simulcasted on One and 10 didnât promote it much. Not to mention that the coverage (in terms of what FTA viewers can access) will be a significant downgrade from the dedicated coverage which Seven currently offers using their own talent as well as Skyâs Lizzie Jelfs
