Ten - On-Air Presentation (1991-94)

Wasn’t the huge Ten thing at the time that the “Late News” was literally every night, including Saturday and Sunday? 5pm and 10pm-ish. The point of difference. I’m pretty sure 10 Late Edition ran 10.30pm-ish every single night. But then again, my memory

Ten having a lot of faith in Col’n Carpenter, putting it on at 8.00 after a 20-year-old repeat of Are You Being Served :stuck_out_tongue:

There was some very questionable programming choices in the early 90s on 10 when the cupboard was bare.

This was in the midst of their first major batch of financial troubles right? I guess they didn’t exactly have the cash to go out and license top tier content and probably why they had to settle for old British comedy from the '70s.

I thought Canwest had saved them from their financial problems?

IIRC, Westpac essentially bought Ten out of receivership for a song in 1991 (probably not unlike CBS buying Ten in similar circumstances years later), and then sold it off to a consortium headed by Canwest and that also included smaller Australian investors.

It’s an odd memory stick in my head but I remember most of these title cards, the first time around!

The ET one in particular had a seperate ‘stinger’ ad campaign for about a month before it aired, from memory. It was one of those classics that took forever to make its way to TV. Real blockbuster stuff.

Also, that Hinch logo (and format) would still work today.

Bingles was a sitcom set in a smash repair workshop. It starred Shane Bourne, Andrew Maj, Russell Gilbert, Tammy MacIntosh, and former D-Gen member Nick Bufalo. Ran on and off for 23 episodes, ending June 1993.

Interesting to see that the Bingles cast included:
*Shane Bourne, who had been a regular on Hey Hey It’s Saturday, and
*Russell Gilbert, who joined HHIS shortly after Bingles ended.

Now note the timeslot that Bingles aired in…

(Ian McFadyen, who created Bingles, noted this in an email he sent to a now-lost site documenting the history of Aussie TV game shows)

I think Bingles originally aired on a Sunday night, but it probably got bumped to Saturdays for summer/non-ratings reruns or any unplayed episodes (noting the December date on that video) which would not have put it up against HHIS which would have already wound up for the year, AFAIK.

EDIT: I may be corrected. Wikipedia, FWIW, says the show premiered in the Saturday timeslot but it was during non-ratings (December) so would have not been up against Hey Hey

A period when Australia was still making a few interesting attempts at the sitcom. I think in the same year or before, we also got Bligh on 7, from the Fast Forward crew.

Love the ‘That’s Sydney That’s Ten’ promo. I miss that period where the networks would produce a city-based promo aligning themselves with their community. Yeah, they’re cheesy, but I do think they build viewer connection and loyalty.
