Or just kill it and extend the local news again. Use whatever resources to boost national reports in the local bulletins. Don’t need high paid presenters for 30 minutes.
Try singing that without any awkward pauses! ![]()
Or maybe use the N Trance cover of Stayin Alive and have the contributors walking the street with one variant where the Bee Gees “imposters “ got shot being a Denham cut out. At least it would give us something to smile at
Fist time watching this year and much improved product. The first ad came on at 6:16pm. They covered the royal commission with a live interview then into a weather explainer and package regarding heat wave, fires and floods. Then live cross to a reporter covering bush fires and a resident in Qld suffering from the floods then over to Josh for more weather explanations and maps. Very well done overall.
How would this show go at 7.00pm against ACA?
As bad as it’s going now. It’s more a distillation of the days major national stories it would seem. Goes into greater detail. I’m sure there’s als the odd tabloid stories you’d find on ACA. Look no matter what 10 do at 6pm will never rate. At least it’s local content and it’s in the news space so they can remain relevant as a legitimate free to air network.
The local news (a few years back) rated a lot better. I can see 10 eventually returning this as it has done on Sunday nights.
And Saturday’s. Weekends are 5-6:30pm. Terrible IMO.
I think the only way 10 might be able to compete is to have a nationally produced bulletin and a state bulletin back to back. 5pm be a 1 hour edition with 6pm a half hour bulletin. If 10 is insistent on keeping 10 News+, I think it should be a late night program. It possibly could have worked as a half hour program backing onto the 25 minute late news bulletin.
National news doesn’t work against two local rivals.
Couldn’t do any worse than 10 News+.
A half hour national news bulletin would have the biggest stories of the day AND have no fluff stories. It would be a point of difference to the hour format
Wouldn’t work. They tried it before. Would be barely different to the local bulletins they’re already putting out. They only have four - five local stories a day in the major capital cities. There isn’t enough national news of note to go up against a local 7 or 9 News.
They haven’t tried it since 7 and 9 went to an hour at 6pm. Last time they tried it was during the so-called “News Revolution “ around 2011 when Neighbours moved to 11.
If they are trying a news program, they should be delivering proper news program. As Arnotts biscuit companies say “there’s no substitute for quality “
Will not work. It’s been attempt and tried. People who want news at this time will always prefer the two local options.
And the example you have mention mirrors the current format of 10 News +, which we all know is a complete failure.
If the idea that it won’t work is based on what 10 tried in 2011, here are some points to consider:
- In 1996, Seven tried a 5pm news bulletin weekdays and failed. Leas than 10 years later both Seven and tried a 4:30pm News bulletin that has since evolved into various forms and lengths - currently 4pm til 5pm weekdays. If the idea a late afternoon bulletin wouldnt work, the 4pm bulletin wouldn’t exist.
- The 1996 attempt of a 5pm failure would also have led to the current 5pm Saturday and Sunday bulletins not airing on 7 and 9.
What I am saying isnt what 10 News + is because it focuses on the most important news stories of the day, not local ones, not filler health stories or some random speech by a foreign leader
Both timeslots you have listed are not the highly competitive localised time-slot from 6-7pm. A national bulletin will never work against Seven or Nine. And advertisers would rather invest their money into an alternative that attracts a different demo.
We can agree to disagree on this one as I for one would watch a straight news bulletin without all the fluff at 6pm over what 7 and 9 churn out. I seriously doubt I am the only one that would tune in if it was straight news.
That’s okay. But I have history and results on my side that prove it won’t work. As we are seeing now with 10 News +.
I agree with you that there is probably appetite somewhere for a serious national, agenda setting bulletin, but not at 6pm. People do not have time or attention span to watch that stuff in that time slot.
It would needs to be later in the night, like we see in UK. 9 or 10pm.
By the way the 4-5pm national bulletins you use as an example on 7 and 9? Most if not all transitioned into a local bulletin in the five capital cities.
