I was pleasantly surprised this evening watching Ten News +. There was an interview with the Vic opposition leader Brad Battin, and a discussion on the Melbourne crime wave and VIC Labor also ahead in the polls. Then there was a segment on Trump and Albo’s meeting.
It was the on a par with the ABC, in terms of topics covered and quality of journalism.
There is demand for more serious / harder news, and it was good to see.
Not having a go or anything, text can sometimes be a bit aggressive. But look at what about News 24? Its a rolling news channel, but not a high rating one (unless there’s event reporting)
It’s not a rolling news channel 24/7. There is in-depth interviews and a focus on key stories, especially Afternoon briefing at 4pm and The World at 9pm.
But it’s not rolling news, it’s in depth news including interviews with political leaders and experts on different topics, to delve deeper into the issues. There’s a big difference.
10 News+ needs to cover the stories that matter and offer an in-depth investigation where appropriate. They need to avoid the fluff and give a genuine alternative.
One good example of a current story is Trumps demand that the US DOJ pay him $230 million for past investigations. Another is the Russia-Ukraine and the international position of US vs the rest of the world.
If 10 News× can’t deliver then it should be cut back to a half hour straight national news bulletin and move the format to another slot. Maybe even drop the late news and make News+ a modern day Newsworld
The sad fact is more viewers wanted the lighter format that The Project was offering, but all 10 execs kept hearing was that it was too woke and sending them broke. So they swapped it out for something different and most viewers stopped watching.
