Ten News + (Starts 30 June)

Be innovative. A FAST news service streaming 24-7, partner with the likes of Reuters etc and use it as a spinning wheel. Top of hour Australian headlines updated 6am-11pm, Ten news broadcasts live.

There’s a FAST channel on Samsung called LeadStory which Ten content already contributes to with reports.

Seven and Nine don’t even have streaming news channels and their news divisions and brands are 4x that of 10

I don’t think that’s realistic thinking.

10 News cirica.2005 was a better local news than 7 or 9News circa.2025
Now though, much of a muchness.

Yep, I’ve said it before but it couldn’t be that hard to add an Australia channel to CBS News/Paramount+ could it?

They’d have about 9 hours of content already with the state bulletins, add another hour of state bullitens or get someone to stay at the Sydney desk between lunchtime and 5pm maybe use Perth for more than it’s current hour a day and you’d have a decent offering. CBS or other affiliate reports as filler.

Yes they are.
But as mentioned above, FTA will crater at some point and Australia has held on longer than others.

Those bigger newsrooms will be able to adapt because of their weight of content, Ten can’t and won’t be able to as it stands - where do they go to? That’s why they need to find something others aren’t doing and get there before. The headlines wouldn’t even need to be read in vision . I’m not calling for a 24/7 rolling live news channel but something low cost at first, raw video with the ability to scale up.

I don’t think FTA is going to crater.
It’s going to keep evolving.
It’s still the place advertisers go for mass reach.
It still draws bigger audiences than streaming.
If FTA were to crater - I doubt paramount AU sees its future in news.
It would see its future in para+ and ents.
If you have you have a huge news division and a huge part of your business is news then yes you need to be launching a 24/7 streaming channel.
But that’s not 10. It’s just never been 10.

So who would watch that - it sounds terrible. How would you monetize that?

Why would you focus on that ahead of filling a time slot that attracts 450k and sells advertising.

You wouldn’t but get that same content onto a fast channel (as well as broadcast), insert ads into it and it’s another revenue stream for minimal outlay and might be a stepping stone to slowly building more of a digital presence/audience.

According to Annette Sharp in her column on news.com.au, sources say that Ten News+ will model itself on Nine’s tabloid style A Current Affair program.

The article also includes eight reasons from television news veterans as to why this program won’t be a ratings success.

  1. The show is too bulky with too many unknown reporters and inexperienced producers
  2. History suggest that Ten doesn’t give news programs time to establish themselves (because the nation has never turned to Ten for news)
  3. Ten’s record of extended national news program fails is long and stretches back decades
  4. An hour is too long off the back of a local news bulletin
  5. A network serious about producing quality news supports its stars when they are embroiled in legal action over content produced on their network (Lisa Wilkinson)
  6. The nation’s population is too small to sustain another 6pm news hour
  7. The producer in charge, Daniel Sutton, has no experience producing programs of this variety
  8. Ten appears unsure of its new target market

All sounds a bit like bias opinion from a rival media outlet.

News.com.au are hardly a competitor to this program or should they be worried about it. If she is reporting that it will be a tabloid program then I’ll take her word for that.

But they are going to differentiate from 7 and 9. 6pm around the world is known as a news time and I guess they are utilising their news resources to put itself into the news time not to try and smash the others but have a presence and re-establish itself with news after so many years of neglect.

Looks like NewsCorp is warming up its audience for a new program to target.

Link to the article according to which says “Ten has no hope of winning the slot”. Seems a tad ambitious to say the least.

To be fair, we slam every network. For everything. Why? Because we can.

It’s a bit rich for Annette Sharp to be dishing out advice to women in the media when she is usually the one who is bagging their efforts.

Murdoch media (News Corp) is designed to convince you that the competitors products are inferior to the PAID alternative. Not forgetting Sky News Australia is screened on regional tv.

Annette Sharp works for an alternative outlet. They were already off the mark with what this program would be, as was The Daily Mail. It wasn’t until @aarontvcentral said it wasnt accurate that we even considered if would be wrong.

Too long? Perhaps, but it depends on who the target audience is

The additional news service at 6pm isnt going to be a problem. The only problem is, could be a 1 hour program at 6pm after a 5pm news program. This however isnt much different to the 4pm news hour and the 6pm news hour on 7 and 9.

The way i would do it is a 3pm national news, a 5pm national news, a 6pm state edition then a current affairs program. The problem would be changing what you offer at 5pm.

Keep in mind what is on offer is what 9 and 7 offer at 4pm and 6pm, just back to back.

Very small tidbut but:

  1. In the guides its referred to as 10 News + as numerical. I notice this thread is Ten News+
  2. This program will be repeated after 10’s Late News - basically taking The Project (encore) slot

Thank god they didn’t touch the 5pm product, still remember the ratings dropped on Saturdays when they moved that one to 5.30 and I don’t think they fully recovered their audience when they returned it to 5pm not long after.

Forum ruling IIRC - there was a debate about it in the Ideas, Issues, Suggestions thread.
I don’t think this would be any different.

As expected to share the costs across two hours per day like they did with The Project. I still think the repeat would be better on One (now Bold). I said the same when they started that “encore” many years back now.
