Canberra getting a dedicated metro quality bulletin, or even a 30 min opt-out like 9 Gold Coast or 7 WA would be a great step forward. The Canberra Region already has a similar population to the Gold Coast.
For all other markets, Nine tried to crack them with hour composite bulletins, but after the COVID shutdown of the regional bulletins they didn’t see any advantage in bringing them back. Seven have maintained the status quo since taking over Prime7. I doubt 10 would be willing to try.
Regional viewers seem to be very possessive of having their local half hour. Seven wins the regions, even where they only have noodle updates.
Agreed, Canberra is a capital city in its own right. It is Australia’s capital. It should have a metro-quality news service replacing 10 News Sydney. Seriously 10, you’d win over viewers in Canberra by having a dedicated metro-grade news service in Canberra.
A lot happens in Canberra, especially in politics. So I can’t see why 10 is stalling around when they should introduce a dedicated Canberra bulletin. Don’t treat Canberra as a regional city.
If anyone at 10 is reading this, consider launching a Canberra news bulletin at metro level. You know you want to, you said you’re committed to local news, so do it. Seven doesn’t want to, and neither does Nine (despite opening a new Canberra studio - the only news bulletin is WIN coming from studios in Wollongong).
Come on 10. Be the network that cares about Canberra, just like how you care so much about local news in the 5 main capital cities. Canberra isn’t considered regional, it’s Australia’s capital.
If you do it right, you will win over viewers. OK sure, those viewers might watch Seven and Nine, but giving viewers the option to watch a local Canberra bulletin at 5pm on 10 might be the best decision you make. You would then well and truly have a national presence, capital-city wise.
They should give it just one crack and see how they go. It might resonate with Canberrans after all.
Yes, even just as updates, it would do wonders to reinforce their commitment to the news brand overall. A well produced and branded local update might actually attract a few more viewers to the metro bulletins.
It would also help to better integrate the updates into the rest of their news offering but priorities are obviously elsewhere.
To back up your point KICK-IT, this is the network that had a hybrid/composite bulletin for Brisbane/Sydney and Melbourne/Adelaide not that long ago. They’re not going to be adding new regional bulletins (much as we would love them to) because the economics aren’t there.
If anyone is going to do a local Canberra bulletin, it will be either 9 or 7.
Even a very basic regional backdrop for the into or the set would look nice and make it less generic. Appreciate they are pumping these out across multiple regions but wouldn’t be hard to change accordingly. I recall back in the day (Jarad Coote, Aggie Bradshaw, Tim Hatfield era) they’d have local backgrounds for the weather.
Not Nine, they announced 9News Tasmania would launch in early 2023 but they broke that commitment/promise to deliver such service, a service that was meant to replace WIN News there. Result? WIN News is still in operation in Tasmania to this day (minus the local Hobart studio).
If anything, ex-Prime7 in those Watson studios should launch a Canberra bulletin, whether 1/2 hour local or a 1-hour composite bulletin, at 6pm. They have local bulletins for parts of Regional NSW (i.e: services not dominated by WIN or NBN News, like Wollongong and Newcastle/Central Coast/Northern Rivers respectively).
True that. I’m of the mind that neither of them will try do it as things stand (9 has to deal with WIN, and 7 News Sydney seems pretty popular).
I was just trying to say that it’s unreasonable to expect 10 to (re-)start a local Canberra bulletin.
Their news operation is run on fumes and prayers. They just consolidated some roles out west. And not so long ago they ran composite bulletins in 4 out of the 5 major markets.
If you are talking about the new 9News Parliament House studio being used for a Canberra bulletin. Na, there is zero chance of that. That studio is in leased space within Parliament House, as are the other media bureaus for the sole purpose of reporting on politics with very minor exceptions. They would be breaking their lease conditions if they did anything else. It won’t happen.
This is an idea I had bouncing around for a while. It’s not inconceivable to do something like that. But you’d also run the risk of naming the bug wrong and looking like we don’t “get the region”. Like would updates for Bendigo just have “Bendigo” as the bug? Sounds like we only deal with Bendigo. Still better than nothing, I suppose.
Maybe someone could work it out based on presenters, but is there a chance that Seven in Launceston make the TDT updates? It would make a very small amount of sense because it would be Seven, as owners of half of TDT, producing them directly rather than Seven/WIN needing to pay Ten to produce Ten updates for a Ten station…
Wait, so the exSCA10 stations noodle updates are from the exSCA7 Tasmanian studio but TAS itself (TDT) gets their updates from the studio that 7 moved to? Or have I just been getting this wrong the entire time?
Ever since SCA sold their stations to 10 and Seven, all of the 10 updates come from 10’s studio in Hobart and the Seven updates and Tasmania news (including the 10 Tasmania updates) come from Seven’s studio in Launceston. Both Hobart and the original Launceston studios were previously under the SCA7 Tasmania umbrella.
Before the sale, the 10 updates may have been split between Hobart and Launceston? Not 100% certain, though.
