Let’s leave all this employee management to the higher-ups at Network Ten.
Not to mention, the one benefit of Narelda reading from Perth was that it was from Perth. Local presentation (of sorts) at a time when the Perth ratings are pretty poor. Going back to Sydney four weeks later can’t really be helping the bulletin perform.
Exactly
Apologies if I’ve been blunt this evening, but I’ve had enough of the shit decisions made around this building. I, along with so many others, put so much blood, sweat, and tears into this place, and our bosses often let us down.
News and programs are at their lowest levels in years, and yet management, including Beverly and Martin for news, doesn’t care.
I think hearing from people inside on things that are occurring in the newsroom meets the criteria for MediaSpy.
Who would normally fill in and present from Perth if she takes the night off?
Why would Martin say no though? Perth news has been presented from Sydney on weekends for 15 years. It is almost the status quo. The rest of the bulletin is there, production is there, the studio is in use. If Narelda is willing to work, I am not sure why he would say no. It is the presenting from Perth that is the special condition, but that benefits the local bulletin, so I am sure he really isn’t phased. For all we know the agreement could have been that he will let her read from Perth if she presents from Sydney whenever she is in town.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don’t think she has been away since she started
Natalie, Jess Brown, and Estelle Lewis would be asked if it is planned. last-minute, it would be Georgie or Taylor.
If Narelda wants to read in Sydney perhaps she should have stayed in Sydney. The position was created for her to read in Perth at an additional cost to the network.
You don’t have other presenters from other networks reading elsewhere because they decided to go on holidays.
Other networks don’t read their news interstate. 10 does. Kate reads Adelaide from Sydney all the time at her “demand”. 10 had to give Narelda a position when she returned from maternity leave. Her presenting from Perth not only benefits her but also 10 too. I’m sure both parties are happy with the arrangement.
Did they though? Her job before she was on leave was daytime news from Sydney. She expressed desire to move back to Perth. That voids her contract. She either reads from Sydney or resigns.
They didn’t have to offer her Perth weekends. She made the choice to move to a place where a position wasn’t available.
Kate lives in Sydney, and this was known when she accepted the full-time reader position, which was offered specifically to her because she was based in Sydney. She didn’t move to Sydney and demanded the role. And if Kate is in Adelaide she reads from Adelaide either as an OB or in studio there but doesn’t demand to.. She only reads in Adelaide when she is there for the network.
Sounds like you’re a Narelda fan. But let’s be clear. The plan was for her to return to lunchtime but she advised she wanted to move back to Perth. When her paternity leave was up she was to return to Lunchtime but NARELDA wanted to move home She had discussions with management prior to this to see if there was anything she could do at the network in Perth. At the time, there was nothing, and Narelda was going to leave the network. Someone and I won’t say who suggested Narelda read weekend news in Perth and there were discussions with Martin and Narelda around this to see if she happy reading the weekend news. Narelda was and that’s how it came about. There were no discussions prior to have arrangements in place that if she were in Sydney she could read from here.
Is it bad that the Perth news is read from Perth though? Is it bad that 10 wants to keep an employee of 25 years happy so they came up with an arrangement that suits them both? Keeping Angela on lunchtime also keeps her utilised with something to do. Honestly, I was surprised they didn’t push Natalie aside for Narelda. I am glad that they didn’t, but I am surprised.
I am sure 10 would rather Narelda work this weekend than take leave and since everything else is up and running in Sydney, I just don’t see why Martin would have an issue with it?
That voids her contract? Have you actually seen her contract?
We don’t and nor should we know the details of anyone’s contract. I suppose the rub though is hoping it’s somewhat equitable to what other people are being asked to do in very fiscally restrained and trying times.
At the end of the day, contract or what, it just isn’t a financially viable decision to have Narelda to do weekends in Perth, when Georgie can/did it from Sydney. I’m presuming Narelda doesn’t do anything else from Perth.
In this current climate, do they need Narelda?
I agree, but I see it the other way. 10 shouldn’t have signed up Georgie with nothing to do, when they have Narelda, Angela, Ursula and the Plus presenter all in contracts. Why can’t Narelda do the national bulletin from Perth so Perth can still have its local bulletin from Perth?
As TVjunkie said above, the plan was for Narelda to return to lunchtime. They hired Georgie for the role months before Narelda was due back. They weren’t to know she had other plans and no intention to stay in Sydney and do Lunchtime.
Maybe if they knew earlier they would have gone with the plan you suggested.
Having everything set up isn’t the issue. The issue is the way it was handled, with a presenter telling our Vice President of News that she is here in Sydney talking as a commentator at an event, and that he needs to arrange for her to read that’s what people are frustrated about.
Georgie was signed last year to read the national and the Perth redo. She was signed before Narelda had decided to return to Perth and ask for a position over in the west. Georgie also reports and fills in on 10 News+ she has things to do
Georgie didn’t have anything to do when she was signed up in July/August until Chris was told she was not being renewed in November.
They were aware that Plus was a problem and I suspect they had early plans to dump the Afternoon bulletin then. They were also aware that Narelda was due back and that they had an excess of presenters that would have left at least one of them (whether that be Narelda, Angela, Ursula or the Plus two) under-utilised for their pay.
