Does Nine have lifetime rights to 60 Minutes branding? I know 10 gave them rights to air the American stories.
$$$
I think this is a little bit of an overreaction for Denham
From the recent hirings, it does seem like they are developing a 60 minutes, Spotlight, 4 Corners type show for the network.
Problem is they donât give anything enough time to bed down. Itâs a revolving door of launch and cancel.
The Australian is reporting that a Bill Hogan is also leaving Sevens Sydney newsroom to join 10.
Denham is being reported as the host of the new program and Amelia was given $50k more than her seven contract. Reportedly on $220k a year at seven so sheâll be up to $270k
Apparently this is all part of a $20m cash injection from paramount for new content across the network.
Back in 2011, 10 invested $20m for the entire news evolution.
So is it all going to the news or could we be seeing shows outside of news/current affairs?
Iâm not optimistic about any of this.
Theyâve been smart and cautious about their spending on news for years, and suddenly they seem to be splashing cash on it.
I wonder what the money allocation is for news vs other new network content.
The fact that they are seemingly not allocating much of it to 5PM shows that they donât have much hope for the timeslot?
Hopefully some of it can fix the Brisbane control room situation. Having a half prerecorded bulletin is not on.
Hopefully these new hires work both for the 5pm bulletins & their other new offerings
Hope some is spent on advertising or itâs going to be in the âto dieâ hole before it even airs.
I wonder if this rejuvenation of sorts for 10s content offering is a push come BB to show theyâre a competitive network to try and snag sports (NRL) rights. Got my tinfoil hat on I know.
Is it fact?
Itâs become evident thereâs so much more we donât know. Who says they arenât investing into 5pm?
Fair point. We donât know for sure. All the articles seem to point at primetime. Hopefully some of it goes to 5PM or helps to promote their main offering as @MossPickle suggested.
I hope not. It wouldnât be good to blow it all on that. I would think theyâd invest in some other formats as well.
I hope that itâs a measured investment. They should be applauded for investing in news in this day of extremism in social media and extreme right wing coverage elsewhere.
I still think their local news needs a beef up. Theyâre not covering as many local issues on the 5pm hour and I agree they need that extra control room so they can go live all the time into Brisbane.
Of course none of this will legitimize 10 until they get a marquee sport to anchor the network. It was at its most successful when they had the AFL. With those rights locked away, the NRL is the only option. Theyâll need a lot more than $20m.
For the NRL to even consider 10 theyâll need to offer a massive premium on the rights. The AFL is getting approx $630m a year. The NRL would want $650-700m a year from Nine or Fox/seven. To go with 10 theyâd want $800m+ a season given the perceived risk.
At risk of dragging this thread off track, mods - move as you see fit - Could P+ be giving them this hit to beef up their offerings to then approach the NRL and say âmoneyâ (we saw them do this with AFL) and show them their network thatâs got semi-competitive offerings. Again, got my MediaSpy tinfoil hat on here.
I sure hope not.
Because in the likely event that they donât get the NRL, theyâll cut the news back to barebones again. There wonât be any other premium sport on offer until the 2030s.
I wonder what timeslot this new current affairs show will have.
So we donât go off track.. the strategy here from paramount is to invest in news. Itâs doing it with CBS. Itâs an offering that larger streamers arenât offering. Itâs adding depth to the content offering. They see 7/9 make up most of their local hours with news and live sport. They need to be in that space to be relevant.
Adding more reporters and producers will also allow them flexibility for rolling coverage and the like when big events warrant it.
It will be interesting to see how the broader strategy plays out.
Where did you hear about CBS getting a boost?
Maybe not a money boost but the stuff theyâve been doing with 24/7 and all those new studios in local markets. Maybe not more money but greater integration from O&O markets into national coverage etc.
The Australian also said
So far, White has managed to convince Sevenâs award-winning former foreign correspondent Amelia Brace, 7News Sydney reporter Bill Hogan and Spotlight producer-reporter Hitchcock (of mushroom murder trial fame) to change channels and sign on for his untested new program.
We can reveal all three handed in their notice at Seven last week, with Brace and Hitchcock both exiting the stationâs Media City headquarters in Sydney within hours of quitting. They will start their new jobs at Tenâs Pyrmont bunker on Monday morning.
Hogan will be required to work three more weeks in Sevenâs Sydney newsroom before following them across town to whatâs being referred to internally at Ten as âthe investigative unitâ.
Interesting to read Spotlight described
Spotlight â a comparatively young, unknown brand that still struggles with being mistaken for the discount haberdashery chain of the same name.
I wonder if theyâve managed to get anyone from Nine News.
