Like Hinch in 1991 on 10? Or Alan Jones Live in 1994?
I think 10 suits a more brash, American style tabloid vibe. Theyâve been down the âseriousâ route before with Negus and Page One and it just doesnât suit them. Think more Hinch. Maybe a Kochie type host. 7pm.
Could they take the Today Tonight name/brand?
Obviously, I donât know what the project is. But 10 has plenty of journos in-house that would be great for a public-affairs/investigation show- Sandra Sully, Ursula Hager, Hugh Riminton, Lachlan Kennedy, JohnPaul Gonzo, Hamish MacDonald, Sarah Harris,Waleed Aly, Narelda Jacobs, Angela Bishop. I get wanting a big name (such as Liz Hayes) to launch the project off. But, surely it is not just economical but also better for morale to promote your current under-utilised talent and replace these reporters with new younger ones in the newsroom?
Youâre right here that they have some great talent as part of the stable already, however..
I think the problem is that 10 generally donât just have people sitting around on the payroll to do this additional work, they already do more with less and teams are stretched enough as it is.
Diligently adding additional resources, both in front and behind the scenes to manage additional workload for any new initiates or programming is a good thing.
Itâs nice that they have more brands in their suite. But any additional resources should be going to the 5pm bulletins. Despite recent investments, they are still far from healthy.
Yes, they could be doing that. But I doubt Amelia is leaving Seven to just report on the 5pm bulletin.
Iâm still a little worried that they seem to be spending big on talent rather than more reporters in the newsrooms, infrastructure investments (such as another control room) and then theyâll cut big again if/when it all fails⌠vicious cycle. Also big personality salaries doesnât necessarily fit well with a value for money, high output and sustainable newsroom which seemed like a good strategy from 10 to date, particularly with uncertain and unpredictable ownership hanging over them.
I agree, weâve all seen it too many times.. spending big on talent and new resources before it all comes crashing down in redundancies and cuts. Very skeptical about all this.
Hopefully the investigative unit goes towards bolstering the 5pm bulletins a bit more as has been said, but canât really see them investing too much more (other than alluded brand refresh) in it tbh given theyâve already returned all local bulletins, reinvested S10 budget into daytime and found a way to make late news on the cheap etc.
Their focus I believe will probably be around increasing the capacity to launch additional news & currrnt affairs programming to support their schedule and produce content which has a longer shelf life and that can sit across multiple platforms than just daily headline type stuff.
Valid point, but is Amelia a big signing for them? Sheâs essentially a senior reporter, something they need more of. Granted itâs been mentioned some of the other talent theyâre supposedly signing are well known names etc. I think they learnt a very expensive lesson chasing bigger name talent like Wilkinson, which didnât exactly yield them good value on their investment there.
Also valid, everything seems to be fairly cyclical when it comes to this sort of thing at 10. Though Iâm slightly buoyed this time by the fact theyâre going slow & steady with this rebuild (gradually returning all local bulletins etc) than a full on revolution which inevitably doesnât work and they lose confidence and cut.
Letâs see what happens.
The multi talented Denham Hitchcock has joined 10 News.
Big news. He only just returned to 7News recently.
Seems 10 is the place to be.
Yup. I donât think itâs over yet either!
These are big name senior reporters.
Wonder if Denham and Amelia will work across all news and current affairs or just this rumored long form show.
Theyâll be working and developing ideas across 10 News.
I find the timing interesting. I could be well off but Iâm wondering if the plan is to have this refresh/ launch new news programs to align with the return of Big Brother perhaps? Giving both products the best chance to succeed? Launch a new current affairs show after the live first BB episode?
I know that 10 is known for going big on news and making cuts shortly after launching. However, considering the current climate where many networks are making staff cuts, 10 deserves to be applauded for investing in a news and investigative program at this time.
These are very interesting developments.
Certainly hope these plans work out for them.
Donât want to see another axe swung in a year.
Denham Hitchcock is a fantastic appointment.
How are all these big names moving to 10? Seems very interesting.
