Ten News First Content and Appearance (2015-Sept 2020)

Any numbers on the 6pm ratings this week? @TV.Cynic

The numbers are staying higher than what 10 had previously been achieving. On some nights the numbers have been impacted by Perth viewers watching BBL and on others when there has been big news the numbers are up - yesterday for example rated higher than the previous week thanks to Sydney. It looks to me like approx 80% retention of the 5pm audience in 25-54 and up to 90% with younger audiences.

So, the numbers are better than before, however still not competitive. I think, anything more will need a big promotional push, more resources or some bigger change to 10 News overall.

From 1 January 2020, 10 News First will be split into two bulletins.

5pm 10 News First
6pm 10 News First
6:30pm The Project

Good move. Should’ve been like that in the first place. I assume this is only in regards to the EPG and shouldn’t alter the current bulletin formats.

Correct but they wouldn’t split it like that unless it was going to be a separate 30 mins, right?

@lexington would you be able to confirm please?

Im thinking that they want people who are channel surfing to see that the news on 10 has just started, instead of them thinking that they’ve missed an hour of the 5pm bulletin.

I reckon so too

Having separate listings in the EPG for 10 News First at 5pm/6pm is something that should’ve been done from Day 1 of the experiment IMO.

I daresay this is no longer an experiment.

I think that was determined from the first day. All the 6pm News had to do was to be an improvement on the gameshow in the timeslot, and it is and retaining more 5pm viewers into prime time.

Maybe not on the first day - part of their hedge for ratings purposes was the specific 90m format and not a split. I’m not sure what internal KPIs they were also hoping to achieve, but if they’ve rung up all their old ones, it might be time to plant new ones.

Not bad for a completely cobbled effort in maybe 3 months max?

Good move 10. Very good.

Now, we need a marketing campaign and a point of difference

“Sydney. For the first time in 20 years, there’s a NEW choice for news at 6”

Wasn’t there a new choice for news at 6 in 2011?

New choice for your LOCAL news.

10 never tried local at 6 (except in the dying stages, but we dont mention them.)

It is quite surprising they are still running the promos with Narelda in them, which comes across as a bit misleading.

Hopefully Ten Perth starts preparing new promos in the new year featuring Monika alongside Tim Gossage and Michael Schultz next to her, perhaps in front of the Perth skyline, or at the News desk.

Emphasizing her three decades of experience in the industry and perhaps some personal comments about the new role would be nice as well, a bit like the Jennifer Kyte promos that aired in Melbourne last year.

Behind the scenes look at the 10 News First set in Melbourne.
Looks like those vertical screens are now gone.

Back local tonight. Only three national weekday bulletins is much improved on previous years.

Will they do a local bulletin on New Year’s Day?

Looks like it. The guide now has the bulletins at 6pm separately from January 1st.
