Ten News First Content and Appearance (2015-Sept 2020)

It is great that each network has approached this differently. I think people are more likely to watch 10’s because it is local news, sport and weather. Maybe speed it up a bit. I would like something like this opener from The Project:

While I do like how The Project packages it up, that intimately is able to serve just as a tease for… 6.30.

Facebook Watch is a weird beast FB is prioritizing. You could probably post the same update on IGTV and have it make as much sense. But they are intended for slightly longer viewing experiences in those respective platforms as well as “real-time” engagement, though these updates cannot be live.

Wouldn’t be surprised if FB Australia finally started doling money out to 10 to do this.

As has been posted, Facebook is paying all the networks (except ABC) to do this.

It’s one of the disadvantages of browsing around the forum in a linear fashion based on the order of suggested threads. Kinda realized that a few minutes after jumping through, ha.

As I said 10 by far the worst at this new Facebook Watch thing.

where as 7 and 9 thought this out and tailored the content for the platform and user, 10 just posted news updates online. The cameras in the background of the shots only make it seem more like an old guy has said “lets put the studio cameras in the back ground - the young people on FB will like that”

They just have not put any thought into this at all. Standard on air updates. Small GFX for mobile devices. Very serious and formal. Random updates at random times of the day. Unlike 7 and 9 - this is nothing I can’t get on air already. They even used the Melbourne skyline on the Adelaide opener and the Sydney skyline for the national update. Great start.

10 News does not seem to get social / digital at all. They persist to post links to 10 Daily on FB which if you like often get 2 likes or 2 shares or 2 comments - rather than post native video like 7 and 9 which gets 10,000 views. Hell their FB pages hardly have any followers - they don’t have a news website. For the network aimed at a younger demo - their news has been the worst at embracing new platforms.

Shame. FB Watch is meant to encourage real time engagement - comments, likes, shares - 9 and 7 do that by asking questions, polls, countdowns, asking for feedback. Who is going to engage on FB with a standard new update? Many 10 News posts get 0 comments - that is zero engagement,

Maybe they should post these on the Channel 10 FB pages which has about twice as many likes as the 10 News National page.

IF FB paid 10 for this - they should ask for their money back

Makes sense.

Of course you’re assuming the networks had a say in what they were going to be doing on this platform.

Of course you’re assuming that nothing is being done behind the scenes - that you are not privy too - to get 10 on the track that 7 & 9 have been on for a decade plus with their associations with Yahoo and MSN which gave them a MASSIVE leg up in the digital space.

But let’s ignore all that and just focus on the negative. As is always the case.

As far as I know it wasn’t compulsory to sign up. If Ten weren’t comfortable with the pitch, why would they sign up?

Why did 7?
Why did 9?

I’m not just defending 10 here, before that card is pulled.

For all we know, there were 3 or 4 pitches put forward and 7 and 9 got in with more money…

For all we know, Facebook’s conditions (content, not editorial) were more strict.

Who knows. At least the 3 of them are doing it.

What’s SBS’ like? No mention of them.

Or for all we know - the folks at 10 News just don’t get digital / social. That could be a possibility too right?

Based on 10 News’ track record of not knowing how to use social and digital - and still to this day - I’d willing to bet that’s what it is.

Take a look at their social pages. It’s really obvious they don’t get it. Some posts get 2 likes.

Why would you produce FB only content with graphics designed for on air when 85-95% of FB logins are on mobile devices?

I give 10 praise where praise is due. The drama is risker. The reality is high quality. They are more daring in new development. Their new brand for ‘10’ leaves 9 and 7 for dead. Their sydney news set is STUNNING. And the 10 social pages seem to get it.

But when it comes social/digital for news - they are clueless.

They are also often clueless with marketing - launching new series with 10 days of promos.

Yes, I guess it’s possible FB laid down rules and said “10 - you must do traditional on air bulletins, you can’t experiment”

Or…it’s also possible - 10 News just doesn’t have the people working there that get it.

But why would FB dictate that one of the three networks cannot experiment with their format?

Hi everyone. Long time reader, first time poster.

As someone who is involved with this program at another media network, I can confirm that Facebook approached all the network’s offering the same partnership deal - equal funding in return for daily video news content lasting no less than 3 minutes (to be able to insert an ad). Each provider has full editorial control over what they create and how it’s presented as long as there is a mention of the platform it’s being delivered on: “Facebook Watch”.

To be quite honest, I think in this instance 10 have dropped the ball. Comparing the product with that of 7 and 9 which was created using the same amount of resources, it just shows that 10 aren’t quite as savvy in the digital space.

Great insight, Welcome

But if 10 did it differently, like 7 or 9, would more people watch? I honestly don’t think so. The QLD clip had so little views because they have neglected the local social media pages (including Twitter) for so long that people don’t turn to (trust) them on that platform anymore.

For watch it’s worth, I actually think 10’s Facebook watch is the most digestible and more likely to be watched in the long term. I honestly can’t see anyone routinely logging into Facebook at 8pm and watching a 12 minute bulletin from 9, for example.

They should make them 1 minute max!! Hello! Or 90 seconds would be pushing it.

(That amazing idea took me 5 seconds to think up.)

Sure, but then there is no funding! :stuck_out_tongue:

Facebook Watch bulletins from tonight.

Bingo.

Well the first two have had 100,000 views each on 9 and 7. That’s no small cheese. I doubt people are logging on at 8. It’s not appointment viewing like the 6pm news. People who are online at that time get a pop up telling them it;'s on - and they can watch. Or it appears inter feeds a few hours later. It’s news on demand more or less. I found myself watching 7’s offering laying in bed at 11pm on my phone - and enjoyed it.

10’s problem is two fold. Yes, they have neglected the digital space in news for 2 decades. So no one goes there for news from 10. I also question the people posting and the type of content they post. 7 posts stories about how to get $14 worth of KFC chicken for free and it gets 200 comments and 11,000 views. 10 posts a story with a link to 10 Daily that takes 20 seconds to load and it gets 1 comment and 12 views. Yet they persist with this method.

10 needs to start doing digital and social news right - and the people will come eventually. But it will take years.

Anyone with half a clue knows that 90% of FB logins are from mobiles. This is produced just for FB. Yet 10 goes with the same GFX layout as on air for 60 inch TVs. your can’t even read the supers.

10 News social/digital team doe snot even understand the most basics alit working with mobile platforms.

Yes. I’m aware of parts of the deal as well. So if you’re right, then you’ve hit the nail on the head… same money. So while 7 and 9 see and have the ability and desire to waste resources on something ‘no one will watch’ according to some on this forum … 10 do not. Hence the tweaked broadcast presentation.

At least 10 are doing local updates…
