That looks very classy. The world thing is an interesting move away from the conventional use of cityscapes. It harks back to a previous time, it’s true. And it sends out a message about quality and reliability. Good move.
The scanline globe for many would be still associated with National Nine News in the 90/2000s, when it was far and away the strongest news brand in the country.
It’s almost a throwback to see Hugh Riminton in front of the globe doing updates.
Nice image of Perth there. (I thought it was Melbourne!)
Also, it’s as if the skyline is NOT the centrepiece - it’s just a nice element of it. The globe is the main look.
I have always loved scanline globes! (I never knew that term by the way!)
I hope they have just as nice and subtle an image of Sydney… they tend to go for pretty dodgy shots.
Would love it as well if they move away from generic Skylines to landmarks.
Queensland could have Brisbane City Hall for example.
That said the presence of a stadium suggests they’ll use that behind the sports-readers.
But some variety would be cool. And definitely twilight shots are the way to go for Ten’s timeslot.
Scanline globe is just a term I made up
Adelaide lunchtime online update:
Background doesn’t animate so I reckon they’ve just changed the panels out in the light boxes again. That said, I actually like it more than the animated version from Sydney/Brisbane thus far - More white, less blue.
I see the point of trying to give the news ‘credibility’ and a serious tone by using the globe but given the only bulletin the network has on weekdays are 5pm local, I think they really would have been better off staying with hyper local branding. It all feels just too generic.
That looks shocking IMO…
Are they doing localised ‘online’ updates for all capitals?
That’s a pretty new addition and a really good thing if it is consistent moving forward.
I agree. For Sydney, an image of the CBD (perhaps taken in an alternative location to the backdrop ABC News NSW uses, which appears to depict the Sydney CBD from Darling Harbour) could make a decent point of difference from the cliché Harbour Bridge/Opera House liveshots.
Or even swap between a number of backdrops of various locations around the viewing area for some variety. There’s probably a lot of people in Western Sydney who’d more strongly identify with a backdrop of a major suburb near them (like Parramatta or Penrith) rather than the city centre where they often feel like tourists!
That is really bad. If they put the middle screen in focus at least, that may make it look a bit more appealing.
Live weather cam?
It may have been live or a loop - the video was jumpy if you looked closely.
Adelaide has been doing these for years. Used to be called lunch time ‘Newsbytes’. Other cities also did them for a bit but only Adelaide seems to still do them.
Their thinking is beyond local television. They are looking at online exposure. The map works for me.
One thing I HATE - when Australia is too small, and the globe is too big.
Sure, diversify into online and other platforms - they should - but how they’ve branded online doesn’t work either. People are looking for local news online not what feels like generic national news.
you mean, in proportion?
yeap, they’ve had that for a few years. it is live, but a webstream from the camera to station.
