Ten News Content and Appearance

IMO the new flow feels like they’re trying to do the reverse of how the BBC hands over to the local news from national.

How similar are the items in the metro bulletins and News+ nowadays? 90 minutes of repeating headlines wouldn’t make sense regardless of lead-in method though.

With all their efforts establishing News+ as a separate programme, intergrating it feels awkward.

Would probably be more sensible if they treat it as a nationwide news segment, with a simple throw from metros along the lines like “and now for all the news across the country and around the world, here’s Denham and Amelia”, and then into News+ headlines

I mean, the metro rundowns do contain stories of national significance.

If we’re going to establish a 90-minute block, so to speak, that part would have to be removed.

Which isn’t how it works.

But 10N+ are getting better ratings - not setting the world on fire level, I get it - than this time last year, aren’t they? Then what’s this really for?

Well, tonight we had Sandra Sully signing off after the weather and introduced 10 News+. She ended with “hope you enjoy the show”. It’s not an extension of the news but a “show”.

Seven News did this in early 2014 before TT was axed on the east coast. Use to tease a story after the weather then go to a break, no sign off.

I think it’s the lead-out, not the show
Both 10 News and DoND are performing.

Flogging a dead horse.

This is the only lead-out message viewers want to hear from the news team at 5.59pm:

“That’s your news for this evening..stay tuned for your nightly dose of The Simpsons.”

It has to work better than having more air time of 10 News+

From a programming perspective I think so. But if programming has given the news division 90minutes to use how they like, the only option the news division should be considering is local news.

Having a flashback to 1996?

I know we take this piss but it really was the only show to work at 6pm.

Did it though? It was still thrashed by news on 7 and 9. Ten had it there because they had nothing else. Same theory they are using for 10 News+ except it costs them heaps more.

A scorchingly busy news day… Vic swelters, recording its hottest-ever temperature, 48.9°C in the Mallee, 45°C in Melb’s outer suburbs. Bushfires rage in the Otways as dangerous winds hamper firefighters, leaving 100K+ across the state without power… for the latest, @10NewsMelb pic.twitter.com/E6cBZIYR9H

Last night’s bulletin rated 103,000. AFAIK that’s the highest Melbourne result since 2022.

Technical issue at the start of the Melbourne this evening. Started with the opening title card but then straight into the first report. No welcome by Jen or introduction to the first report.

Given the impending change to the 5pm ending from Monday, I’m not certain if that’s a technical issue.

Opening shot of Jen had a graphic error as well

After the premature report Jen appeared with an apology

“I seems as if the heat is having an effect on some of the things in the studio tonight.”

It was competitive in the 16-39 demo, sometimes even beating 7 or 9. But that is ancient history.

I hear their cooling system is similar to Nine Sydney tonight /s :stuck_out_tongue:

10’s Late News moves forward in 2026 to as early as 9:30, depending on length of entertainment shows

So looks like it will be a 9:30 when the shows before it are short enough

So anywhere from 9.30 to 10.10pm any night. Viewers will have to guess the start time. Maybe there could be a game and you win a prize if you guess the correct start time.

I try not to be a downer about 10 these days, but the 90-minute bulletin format sucks. It’s exhausting to watch and I don’t understand why it’s back on the weekend - haven’t they got multiple itterations of evidence to show it doesn’t work??
