This is terrible news for everyone across media in Australia, but not surprising.
It’s clear that 10 would rather invest into their entertainment programming/other departments than news. Basically all recent axings at Channel 10 have been news related however 10 News First is basically one of 10’s lowest rating prime time programs too…
I feel for all the people who have lost their jobs from this. Job axing and redundancies are currently happening across all networks as-well - not just 10.
Back to ABC and Nine News I go and Sky News pre 6pm.
What a devastating loss for Ten News all around but in particular for Monika Koss who only just styled at Ten not so long ago.
R.I.P Channel Ten News and the network itself
Have deleted you off my television set channels list
And have removed all traces of ever being associated with this network.
I swear if Lexington comes to defend this decision I’m going to explode.
So we still have no clarity over the news formats. Delayed news into some markets would be a disaster. National weather forecasts pre recorded. This is a joke. The option of all networks is getting worse and worse as to what passes for quality news these days.
Why - it employs Australians, is local and doesn’t come out of your pocket? Would u rather something else? Or more situations like today where local TV is being cut.
Geesh there have been some massive blood baths at Ten over the years but this one takes the cake. Decimating Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide newsrooms is unbelievable. Not surprised to see KAK gone and Bailey should have been gone years ago but a huge lose of talent with Natarsha Belling, Georgina Lewis and Rebecca Morse being given their marching orders.
If Ten are into cost cutting, Id start with Wilkinson.
Surely this has to come up soon. When so many presenters are axed, yet talent that is on air one day a week with a rumoured $2m yearly salary stick around…
I fear this move will hasten the demise of nightly local news bulletins on all channels. As those of us who grew up pre internet with traditional television news die off, the demand for a 6pm roundup of the day’s events is going to decrease. I don’t feel my day is complete without having watched the 6pm news because it is such an ingrained, lifelong habit. Younger people, however, already only consume news that is relevant to them via social media feeds. With these bulletins being padded out with content from far flung places that doesn’t apply to them, even older Australians aren’t going to feel the need to waste their time with one hour bulletins when they can consume all they need to know by clicking on a report on social media.
So I just finished my shift and heard on the radio that this is happening.
This is a joke of a decision. Sure FTA revenue has been dwindling lately from COVID but surely news is much cheaper than most of 10’s reality franchises? The only mildly reasonable explanation for this decision is 10 wanting to focus on their primetime and entertainment element of their network.
I’m gutted for all those losing their jobs. All are talented (except for Bailey and even then he was good at what he originally did) presenters and it is a shame to see them all axed. Another blow to the media industry in Australia.
How are 9 and 7 maintaining large news rooms with all this out out from so many different newsrooms? Surely they’d be hemorrhaging money as well. 10 were already producing the news on the cheap but they’ve really gutted the place. I don’t see how any story from Brisbane would be relevant to Sydney and vice versa. How will state politics be covered? This is all just one big mess.
10 news were just getting their groove back and the 6pm half hour was adding a lot. I thought they’d be on the verge with some sort of mini expansion and now this.
Yeah, @lexington can you provide any clarity here? Is it going to be a Sydney/Brisbane combo bulletin live at 5 or a dedicated Brisbane bulletin pre-recorded from Sydney earlier in the day? TBH, I’d prefer the former.
