Ten News and Current Affairs

I think the next Sydney/Melbourne set (the Ten Evening News era) differed in each city? I can recall DJ in Melbourne having a tight dark newsroom background but Sydney had a blue/purple world map? Perhaps they were the same as some point in 1990 and a crossover revamp by one station, as there are mixed versions and timelines on Youtube. Someone here might be able to recall…

Ten had the same set as Melbourne and Brisbane at the start of the Ten Evening News era but it was short lived because TEN-10 abandoned North Ryde and moved to Broadcom House in Castlereagh Street half way through the year. The purple world map set was introduced at that time due to lack of studio space at Broadcom.

Yes, the larger sets came to an end in Sydney and Melbourne when they sold their original studio facilities. ATV10 is still coming from a shoe box studio.

They really do need a set upgrade down there in Melbourne. It’s so old. It would be good to do a new smaller version of the Sydney set.

10 would probably need to relocate their Melbourne premises to a purpose built facility if they wanted a bigger and more purpose built studio, hard to see how they could do a decent replica of the 10 Sydney set in the current space even when that was the plan previously.

I hope I’m wrong, but most likely this could be the last set we see from ATV10. I think it’s only a matter of time before they go National.

Surely rent would be cheaper if they moved out of the city? I couldn’t imagine Como on chapel street would be cheap.

I hope you’re right to be honest - there is absolutely no justification for the bulletin not being national

Only that they will half their audience around Australia.

Just admit it - YOU want a national 10 News First bulletin for the opportunity to watch Sandra Sully every weeknight! :wink:

Always strikes me that Ten Sydney always changed presenters in the 80’s trying to knock off hendo.

Alright you busted me :joy::joy:

They were successful on a few occasions but there never seemed to be any consistency. Every time a new news director was appointed they’d make changes- new theme, new set or presenter shuffles. They listened more to highly paid American consultants who were engaged to modernise the news rather than the viewers. It really was a dumb move to treat Katrina Lee so poorly when she had been a reporter with the network since 1973 and a presenter since late 1978. Viewers had followed her career growth and marriage and pregnancies. Nine never blinked and didn’t make big reactionary moves when they were being challenged by Ten or Seven in the ratings throughout the '80s and '90s.

Kate was shafted for Ann Sanders. But I do believe the treatment was poor

Sanders replaced by Robyn Johnston. Sanders and Liebmann would’ve been a better combination.

Robyn seemed really out of her depth and she just wasn’t known to the Sydney audience having come from a radio background in Perth the previous year. I did really like the Steve and Geraldine combination, however.

They were brilliant back in the day. Quality news bulletin back then as well.

Steve and Geraldine bulletins are hard to find. Wish someone had a bulletin and put it online.
