Ten Network 2020

The networks are moving towards less channels not more channels. The future is in streaming.

Buzzwords etc but network total overnights still matter and having one less channel effects the overall scorecard

I seriously doubt Ten will ever have a fourth channel. The outlay will not be worth it.

With audiences shrinking in FTA every week, the overnights and total network figures will soon cease to matter.

Agree a fourth channel will just create more cost in a platform that doesn’t require any more content. As you said streaming is where the money is and 10 should focus their attention there. Whether that means creating exclusive shows for 10play to then shift to 10 All Access after or whatever. A few extra percent for the network will not benefit 10 financially. As for 10 targeting the younger demographic. I guess they have realised the market for FTA is an older audience. They need to look at ways to bring that younger audience to their online platforms like 9 has done successfully.

Forget a fourth channel for Ten, what they really need to do asap is make Ten Bold HD!

10 should create a curated channel on All Access with any content they could acquire through the ViacomCBS merger, it doesn’t have to be new or local content but just entertaining escapist type stuff that you don’t have to think too much about.

Just without the ad breaks or having to search something out, sometimes that’s half the battle in this streaming environment we live in now.

But why can’t people just stream that content? Why do you need a channel to do that?

Make both Peach and Bold HD and reduce the TVSN/Spree TV rubbish to MPEG-4

I think a fourth multichannel would be beneficial in someways but it could come at the cost of Peach and Bold. With both (especially Bold) rating pretty well these days I think it’s probably enough to keep 10 competitive.

Why do some people watch terrestrial tv channels that are curated for them? Cause it’s easy and they don’t need to think about it too much.

I’m suggesting that there is an audience for a channel or channels on a streaming platform with curated or themed programming, just like a catch-up player but it just plays back to back episodes of shows.

If my memory serves me correctly, Fetch is doing something similar?

Something like that could work very well on 10 Play. Like a dedicated comedy channel, kids channel etc.

As most of 10’s target audience don’t watch linear FTA these days and mainly use the internet, 10 should target that space and they should be able to find a sweet spot to be different and successful.

Might not be in the official ratings but if done well online I think they could still attract advertisers and make a profit.

Oh, and must all be in HD online.

No they don’t.

As it’s already been said, launching HD versions of 10 BOLD and/or 10 Peach need to be a bigger priority for Ten than launching a 4th channel.

They won’t assist ratings or revenue, linear channels and overnights still rule revenue believing anything else is wishful thinking

Seeing 10 is now owned by ViacomCBS, perhaps both parties should focus on launching Pluto TV (which Viacom bought last year) in Australia and have 10 offer some local content through the service instead of thinking about launching a fourth channel?

It’s something other Viacom channels like MTV, Comedy Central & Channel 5 have done in the last year and it would offer another platform for 10 to distribute their content/shows on

I’d say it’s inevitable we may get it down under, one problem I can see for 10 with contributing content for the service is that they don’t own much of it as it’s all produced externally so would need to pay extra licensing fees etc.

Broadcast TV is shrinking. As others have pointed out streaming is where the growth is. I’m not sure launching a 4th channel is a long term strategy for 10.

Over on TVTonight there is a story that BVOD ad revenue m is up 43% year on year while broadcast is down about 7%

The numbers tell you all you need to know

10 should be focused on beefing up 10Play with more content. Us and original Australian content. Marketing the platform. And growing that revenue. That is where the growth is

It would take 10 new multi channels added to get the kind of revenue growth they can get by beefing up 10Play

Shouldn’t 10 be putting these shows on their on streaming service? I am not sure what Pluto TV is but I would assume that since they launched a streaming service content should be going on that?

While Pluto does have some on demand shows/movies, it’s mostly a service which offers streaming channels (eg; like CBSN)

Think of it as an internet version of Foxtel

There are a lot of channels available, and there is now a lot of on demand content including classic and recent movies and television series, documentaries including music, Discovery and Animal Planet, reality series, DAZN Fight Zone, Major League Soccer highlights, standup comedy, Christian movies, Spanish language movies and series. I’m just looking at it now and the library has expanded since I last looked. The main problem I have with Pluto is it will not work with Chromecast when you try to mirror from a mobile phone - that only works on my laptop. The other issue is that there is no search function.

The thing is, we haven’t heard anything about the Australian launch of Pluto TV since it was hinted in April. So it seems we might have to US VPNs to view it since we originally thought the Australian launch happened after it was hinted.
