which is probably why WIN is pulling the plug now? If it was profitable they wouldn’t be winding it up?
For a market of only 60,000-ish in an increasingly fragmented viewing environment, it’s extremely unlikely that any Ten outlet, whoever provides it, would make money.
Although it is a plausible argument for the closure, however, I would have thought Griffith area in NSW and regional SA where WIN is in solus markets that Ten would have disappeared first, where it’s only one operator sharing the profits and losses
Because they only have to share the revenue with 10, not 10 and Seven like in WA & Mildura. Probably makes more money from it than the joint ventures. WIN also get’s extra revenue from running the Seven station as well, which can possibly help make up for the losses.
But if It was a loss making operation, you would think that closing Ten would be fiscally responsible. If the rationale is that the Seven affiliate station is solus markets are propping up Ten in those areas, that is not fiscally responsible. If WIN was a public company, then the board would be accountable to shareholders. Business does not keep loss making operations going as it affects the company bottom line. The current Mildura scenario is much the same as when James Packer and Bruce Gordon stopped supporting Ten which led to the current ownership situation for Ten.
The proposed legislation amendment is welcome but Labor should have acted sooner. Even if it passes Federal Parliament in the next few days, there will still be a time gap between midnight this Sunday (when MDT signal shuts down) and when some Sunraysia residents are able to watch 10 via VAST.
I notice the local council has been quiet on the MDT closure as well.
Great to see VAST access will be available in Mildura if the FTA want to reduce the service there - Government is acting in the public interest on this one.
This is nothing more than sticky tape covering a major leak In a tap we are In a cost of living crisis who is going to be able to pay $800 for a whole VAST set up, I was on Optus Aurora for a time before new transmitters were installed In Ouyen In the lead up to the analogue switch off & even though I still have my old dish on the roof It would still set me back $400 for the box.
VAST has been made needlessly complicated (and subsequently expensive) to what end? So @WAtvVideos (sorry mate) can’t watch an east coast feed of Imparja and I can’t watch GWN from the east coast?
We shouldn’t be gatekeeping access - it should be a service of last resort that we should be able to access without the need for jumping over bureaucratic hurdles.
Some of the regional broadcasters used to lodge complaints with ACMA about the number of VAST services in their licence area. ACMA were regularly asked to check FTA field strengths outside the residences to confirm terrestrial TV was not useable there. VAST audience leakage was a hot issue for regional TV. If they want to turn off services then there needs to be a lot more leakage.
Open VAST access would greatly reduce its operating costs by getting rid of the administrative overheads.
I can’t imagine there will be many Mildura TV households forking out for VAST to watch Network Ten though. New installations there might be a different story now.
I’ve noticed they’re cramming in wall to wall local advertising in this last week, unsurprisingly. You would normally barely see any local ads in the past.
Also had a 10 play leaflet dropped into my mail box during the week - no mention of the impending close down but just a way to get people to use the app if they’re so inclined after Sunday.
The council could have said it is disappointed with the closure and is urging federal government to take action so that Sunraysia residents can continue to watch 10 on air.
