Wasn’t it because another company was using the TV AUSTRALIA name?
there was a legal dispute over the use of the name but it still took them a long time to get around to removing reference to it in the idents
From Ten in late February 1990:
E Street 1990 Series promo:
Various caps from promos (videos will be uploaded soon):
And a cap from an ident:
Did The Comedy Company change their logo when it came back in 1990?
Melbourne had a slightly different PRG, where the negative space was transparent, not filled in with black, and a different font for the title/classification. But because ATV10 would switch to a dirty feed from Sydney overnight, any late night shows we got the Sydney presentation/ads.
Came across this really interesting compilation of ads on 10 TV Australia at Christmas 1990.
12mins in, it teases “the entertainment network” and “summer of entertainment”.
Within weeks it performed one of the greatest re-brandings in Australian history: (ten): The Entertainment Network. I remember my jaw being on the floor back then - we didn’t have Mediaspy to speculate beforehand!
I remember seeing brief mentions of “The Entertainment Network” in promos like that one and i mentioned to someone at the time that 10 really could do something with the 3-letter initials of that slogan. Sure enough, some months later, they did. ![]()
There was very little to speculate on. An article in The Age, when Ten stripped so many staff and shows at the end of 1990, hinted that a new name or logo for the channel was coming but gave no indication at all what that meant or entailed, or when it would happen.
Apparently, the Sydney Morning Herald was a little more detailed in laying out Ten’s future re-brand plans, mostly told in the context that it was ready to go, but was put on hold. I can’t remember the reason why but it might have been because of the place going into receivership!
Ten’s rebranding in 1991 to emphasise themselves as the home of general entertainment was a masterstroke with “The Entertainment Network” slogan being used.
I quite like that promo but I’m a sucker for a good jingle and that’s one of the better ones. It’s quite sad that they gradually disappeared from TV. Especially once Nine stopped airing their yearly Still the One promos.
I loved the yearly network promo too and I can still remember most of the jingles. It really highlighted the glory days of Australian TV, but also brought with it brand recognition and loyalty to their family of stars.
I say bring it back!
