Telstra TV

What if you paid good money (or rewards points) for this not too long ago?

What a waste.

We’re seeing more of these devices (the early Fetch boxes being a prime example) that require internet access to keep operating even the non-internet components (Fetch for example locks users out after a few days without internet connection) then eventually getting to a point where the internet connection is used to kill the box altogether to force an upgrade.

Wonder how many of these boxes are going to end up in landfill?

You should have been sent a Fetch Mini to replace it.

That is why I like my Apple TV device had it since 2019 and still going fine.

Kayo is sending out emails for users with Telstra TVs.

It links to this help article: https://help.kayosports.com.au/s/article/Is-Telstra-TV-shutting-down-Kayo

Specifically mentions Fetch isn’t supported. I’d think if they had support coming they would flag it, might cause some issues for Telstra shifting people to Fetch.

PSA: If you don’t want your Telstra TV to die, disconnect it from Wi-Fi immediately and DON’T update to version 12.5.3.4014.

Otherwise you’ll get this full-screen pop-up…

Today is the day that the Telstra TV box truly died. Now replaced by Fetch. I’ll post a short video on the latest TTV update and the final shutdown of the once-mighty box soon.

Yeah, I saw that too. I didn’t need to sign out of any FTA streaming services as they were wiped when I turned it on this morning.

There are threads on Reddit and other forums where some people are looking for ways to flash custom firmware onto their boxes to extend the life of them.

I forgot about yesterday’s shutdown of Telstra TV until I saw the latest posts today.

Telstra posted an article about the shutdown on its website only two days ago.

I had set up everything to tape the shutdown at just before midnight, however the update didn’t roll out, and the box itself was still usable. Woke up this morning and turned it on and bang, an update became available. Before I updated it, I checked the apps menu and all apps, including the paywall ones, were removed. Only YouTube was left. If you weren’t into that, there was really nothing else left to do.

You could essentially call it the Update of Death. :skull:

What else can I call it?

Pretty poor from Telstra that they haven’t been able to negotiate their 33% owned Kayo/Binge app onto their 50% owned Fetch platform.
