Tech Talk

Saying it like that is basically just a technical way of saying, well there was an issue with the system we kind of know what happened. But it wasn’t a cyber attack. In other words they either know and don’t want to tell anyone or they don’t completely know what happened.

I did exactly this today as I’ve got two SIM ports in my current phone. I get amazing value on my Optus reseller plan but with their current issues, along with the fact I’m in a regional area and occasionally travel to areas outside of Optus’s coverage area, makes the investment in the cheapest Telstra long life plan I can find very worthwhile.
Tossed up between AldiMobile PAYG and Telstra’s Prepaid Long Life Casual $70/365 day plan and decided on the latter mainly for the guaranteed coverage.

Got a laugh at this rather well timed email from Telstra I got this afternoon. :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: the roaming proposal, I have zero doubt that Telstra would kick up a massive stink about it if the government were to try and pursue it further for anything other than natural disasters unfortunately.

and that’s so typical of Telstra

As much as the timing is on point, it’s coincidental. I received the same email from Telstra on Tuesday.

It would also benefit Telstra. They’ve had their fair share of outages in recent years too.

The real problem for Telstra is that it would give their competitors access to their better coverage.

Google Chrome sucks with video now doesn’t it (or maybe always has?). 10play and Amazon Video are basically unusable for me on Chrome, whereas a dream on Safari (on the Macbook Pro).

Is it time to switch?

Depends I find video viewing on 7plus fine , what issue me are you having with video on Chrome ??

The federal government’s investigation into the Optus outage will be separate to the one initiated by Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Wonder if any of the Optus network resellers will look at failover options should something like this happen again (e.g. make a deal with say Vodafone to roam over to their network automatically in the event of a failure, with calls and text as normal and say, 1Mbps capped data speeds or something like that).

Would be a pretty good point of differentiation and may be something that attracts other Optus customers who might not be confident in the network anymore.

The federal government will want something done especially when you have 000 services and hospitals being affected.

No it wouldn’t, given it would likely be their network people would be roaming on they’d just switch to whoever is the cheapest.

You missed what followed the section you quoted. Telstra have also had some high profile outages in recent years. In these cases, Telstra would get the benefit of their customers not losing their service.

I did go on the balance that by saying that Telstra would lose out because the cheaper carriers could offer the same coverage as Telstra. However, I imagine the host carrier would be able to bill the roaming carrier for using their network. So Vodafone, for example, would be paying Telstra every time their customers roam onto Telstra’s network, so Vodafone would probably need to increase their prices. I could actually have the effect of leveling the playing field by making it more expensive for everyone, which would be bad for customers.

Surprisingly the transition to a new mobile provider from Optus. Bye Optus . Happy with my decision.

Which network are you on now? Vodafone or Telstra?

I left Optus after the crap that went on last time and now I’m with Belong which is Telstra. Works out a lot better then what I had.

I’m with Boost - definitely one of the best providers I’ve been with.
Can’t beat that they have access to the entire Telstra spectrum and they’re dirt cheap.

I went with Felix. $40, it’s on the Vodafone network. Unlimited data (supposedly). However it’s nice to not worry about data allowance but i am sure it will be throttled once I hit a certain gig limit.

For my iPad I went with Belong $15 for $20 gig . Could have just hot wired it to my phone but I really don’t want to abuse my unlimited data.
So all up $55 a month is probably compared to what I was previously paying for both Optus servicesz
