I thought the opening was weak but the rest of the shows was watchable. They have to make sure Anne doesn’t go off on tangents. She’s funny but she can carry on a bit too long sometimes and then it becomes unfunny.
Yeah the rest of the show was good. But those first 10 minutes nearly lost me. And perhaps lost a lot of people. First 10 minutes of any show is probably the most important. They should have reshot it.
Is there a spoiler for Ep. 2 in the Gogglebox promo 10 has on rotation ATM?
It reminded me a lot of the Would I Lie to You? adaptation hosted by Chrissie Swan, in that it took so long to establish what was actually happening that by the time the audience understood, any supposed “comedic” elements had already fallen flat. Dave Hughes looked uncertain about his role and never seemed comfortable as a Team Captain, while Anne often held onto “bits” for far too long and tended to ramble.
What made Ten’s original version—and even the Nine reboot—work was their willingness to lean into the format’s wackier, zanier extremes. That approach blurred the line between a comedy panel show and a variety show, which gave the series its distinctive charm. Unfortunately, the current reboot seems to have overlooked this entirely, misjudging the very element of surprise and unpredictability that once made the show so successful.
Would also argue that Shaun was the secret sauce of the format
Yeah I don’t think Dave Hughes was right for team captain.
Where were all the sound effects? No dings or buzzers for right/wrong answers.
The set is lovely, but has no functionality - why don’t the lines on the floor light up when they buzz in?
They seem like small things, but they help drive the pace and direction of the show. I found it hard to follow.
Sometimes I watch shows like this on 10 and wonder if the producers have ever watched the original formats. It’s like Taskmaster, where they focus more on the pre-produced one-liners of the contestants and try too hard to be funny, rather than the natural improv.
Tuesday’s season premiere was the first show reviewed on Gogglebox this week.
When Will Gibb said he didn’t know whom John Farnham was in the guess the mullet game, Anastasia cried out “shame, shame, shame”.
Not Derryn Hinch?
I went on a nostalgia dive and looked up old eps on YouTube. 10 August 2011 had both Dave Hughes and Todd McKenney on as guests, albeit in different generations
(Todd in Baby Boomers, Hughesy in Gen X)
Definitely felt cheaper and tackier than the 2009 version. I also don’t really know if I rate Anne Edmonds as host yet - I just don’t think she has the natural charisma. I think Guy Montgomery would have been excellent as host to succeed from Micallef, though I understand if they want to try someone completely different.
Agree that the set needed a bit more razzle dazzle with lights and effects. It looks so much bigger than the 2009 version yet so much emptier at the same time. A bit more colour wouldn’t hurt either, the current theme is just ick (in my personal opinion anyway, of course).
We’re only on Episode 1 ![]()
That’s what broadcasters want.
Well yeah, but some hit the ground running, but also that’s why I literally put “yet” in italics. It’s a first impression review…
I disagee about the set. I think it looks fresh and colourful. The old set looked too busy and cluttered to me.
The opening monologue and discussion of pets was a bit slow but the show has picked up since then. Definitely better than the first episode so far. Good cast perhaps.
Miranda Tapsell showed a baby bump when doing one of the physical tasks using props.
She wrote on her Instagram this morning:
Got up to some mischief on Talking Bout Your Gen! Blame my husband @jamcolley for writing all the crazy things I had to do! @anne_edmonds_ you slayed as the host! Thanks @mrstommylittle for being a great sidekick!!
This ep so already better than ep 1 - that said the cake round should have been the final round (much like the old version where the final round would be a random physical challenge which awarded enough points so that anyone can win).
Tuesday 30 September
Host Anne Edmonds pits 3 generations against each other. Gen X: Dave Hughes & Julia Morris, Gen Y: Tommy Little & Nath Valvo, Gen Z: Anisa Nandaula & Tyrone Pynor. Who’s best this week?
Tyrone has been hosting triple j Drive with Abby Butler since August 2023.
The weakness of the Gen Z guests is telling but at the same time I do appreciate the representation. I do think the show would do better with Baby Boomers as well.
I know her health might be an issue but Denise Scott would have been brilliant on this as another Team Captain. If the ratings are okay they should bring it back and see how it goes with 4 teams.
