Burwood in Sydney was ranked 16th while North Melbourne came in 24th.

Burwood is not, was not and will never be cool.

Used to live in Ashfield and the nearest Westfield and cinema was in Burwood.

You have to assume they were writing Northcote and gave up after North and someone guessed? No other explanation.

Depends what you prioritise as culture, but certainly canā€™t think of much where North Melbourne would be a destination. I suppose itā€™s just very low density and relaxed for an area so close to the CBD, lots of parks etc so you can go to a decent cafe and relax? Certainly not notably so - Carlton beats it on that metric.

I wondered if they meant ā€˜North Melbourneā€™ in a more vague and general sense and thus included Lygon St and those places in that area immediately north of the city centre?

In the article itself from Time Out itā€™s pretty clear they are talking about the suburb - though given the lead image is the Queen Vic Markets, which arenā€™t in North Melbourne, it doesnā€™t exactly show a strong caseā€¦

South Melbourne would have been a better choice by their own description, they talk about Errol St - which is more or less identical to Clarendon St in South Melbourne in terms of style and the kinds of restaurants and ā€œcultureā€, plus they have a market actually in their suburb!

Iā€™d take Burwood over either though.
