Survivor (US)

The Hollywood Reporter says the Survivor finale averaged 7.95 million viewers and a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic, its best season-ending numbers since season 35 in December 2017 (8.7 million and 1.9). It was beaten by The Masked Singer in the 18-49 demo.

That was a really good finale. Whilst Tony winning was predictable but deserving. I was a little disappointed though that Michele got no votes though. She didn’t deserve to win against Tony but she did fight towards the end when her back was against the wall. It probably would have been better for her if she had gone into the fire making challenge which might have given her some brownie points had she knocked Tony out there. At least she can say that she is the only Survivor winner ever that has played more than once and never been voted out.

As for Natalie - whilst she played a strong game on EoE I feel that she had a huge advantage because she was there for a considerable amount of time and able to build up tokens. I also don’t think someone that didn’t survive a single vote in the game without immunity should have won. I was actually surprised that she kept all 6 tokens from the extortion play to herself when she wouldn’t have got them without Parvati’s help. I assumed that they would have split those and Parv would have been able to get another advantage.

This season was fantastic overall. Despite being a season that was very twist/advantage heavy and had all of the old school players go early, it still turned out to be a great season. I am not usually a fan of overusing twists like Exile Island or Edge of Extinction unless it is a one off season theme or there is a purpose… but I’m glad they did Edge of Extinction this time around. It just felt so fitting having all the winners stick the game out to the end, having them battle in the finale and it gave a nice opportunity to play tribute to everyone for the 40th season. The cast seemed to bond and the words at the jury to the final 3 were really nice and humble.

I felt a bit emotional when this season ended. It just felt very nostalgic and kind of feels like the end of an era. It’s also sad that the future of the show is uncertain. Jeff still seems confident that they will be able to deliver a season in the fall (September usually it is) which they really want to do given this seasons boost in ratings, so they must have backup plans to film somewhere else in the next month or two if they can’t get to Fiji. I’m trying to think of locations that they could use. Hawaii? Some quiet beach islands off the USA? They could even go inland somewhere in the USA for a different vibe which actually could be a nice change.

The ratings are phenomenal. To put it into perspective - most finales are 2 hours + reunion and the reunion usually sees a sharp drop off (because it’s late after 10pm and some more casual viewers are less interested). However this finale average almost 8million for 3 hours. It probably peaked higher earlier too.

CBC’s upcoming fall schedule includes Survivor’s 41 season though no exact date has been announced.

From The Amazing Race topic.

They could also have Survivor US in Australia and perhaps co-ordinate with the Australian series.

Happy belated 20th birthday to Survivor for yesterday.

They’d need to commence filming by early July for this to even be a chance of happening. Fingers crossed.

Jeff Probst did an interview with The Hollywood Reporter regarding discussions with the Fijian Government on filming Survivor 41 in that country, as well as casting for the new season.

I’m surprised we haven’t heard much more on filming. Inside Survivor seemed to think a couple of weeks ago that it was close to happening but I havn’t heard anything since. The season will need to start filming by mid-July or there is no way possible for the usual late September start.

Survivor has been removed from CBS’s fall schedule due to uncertainty over when production can begin.

In its place will be The Amazing Race Season 32 that finished production before the pandemic. originally scheduled for 9pm it will be seen at 8pm Thursdays

I am devastated but it was always very unlikely that they would be able to have a season ready by Sept. Hopefully it can film later in the year and come back next Feb. The break might be good for them to think about fresh ideas and give the show a bit of a restart post season 40.

Looks like the next season of Survivor will be Fall 2021.

Fiji is not letting flights enter the country and crew living in Australia can’t leave until at least 17 December so production could not start until at least Spring 2021.

Fiji is the preferred location because which it gives Survivor a 45 percent rebate, so almost half of its production costs are covered.

This is a real shame and timelines could shift out further so I still think they should look at finding somewhere in the US/Hawaii to do it. Many shows film there. Love Island relocated from Fiji to Vegas. Big Brother runs in the US with similar style challenges. Even do a back to basics season, less overly complex challenges like the earlier seasons. It is season 41 so an opportunity to reset.

Jakusz died on January 8 after a long battle with cancer. She was the second contestant from Survivor: Palau to pass away after Jenn Lyon in 2010.

I’m really excited by this news. It probably means a new season will be wrapped up by May and ready to go whenever CBS are ready for it.

Great to hear. I’ve missed it especially as the last season was such a good one.
