Supermarkets and Retail

Not yet. They are still looking for a buyer for those two. I’m not sure about Noni B but i reckon Millers would have a good chance at finding a buyer. But then again i thought that about Rivers so…

Rivers is a major tenant at Lavington square where I am. So it will be a big loss for them.

I’d hope Millers survives, I think my Mum pretty much exclusively buys stuff from there. Not really many chains serve that retiree-fashion demographic, so I’d think there’s a loyal customerbase and small store footprints.

For Rivers - it was just the massive downgrade in quality. Years back I’d go there for shoes in particular, but it eventually just fell away to Kmart tier stuff. They used to be decent quality for a reasonable cost, then they just became cheap. Their store network can’t have been cheap with the huge footprints, they’ll leave massive holes in many regional areas.

David Jones Mandurah Forum closing 2nd Feb.

Any decent clearance sales?

Store only lasted 6 years. The small amount of people in Mandurah that asked for a David Jones wanted an actual department store, not what is essentially a buffed boutique store. Doing so just isolated everyone from consistently shopping there.

David Jones Mandurah is being replaced by Timezone and Rebel.

I’m assuming the Rebel store currently located in the Mandurah Home City shopping centre will permanently close their doors and move?

Yes I’d assume so, although I have seen some places like Cannington hold multiple Rebel stores

Aldi will launch a new ice cream truck next Thursday (January 30), selling ice cream from just 36 cents and nothing above $1. It will make three stops: Sydney’s Balmoral Reserve, Green Point Reserve in Brighton at bayside Melbourne, and Alexandra Heads Surf Life Saving Club on Sunshine Coast.

100% of ice cream sales will be donated to Camp Quality, to help support kids facing cancer and their families.

In news from the city, water is wet, grass is green and the sky is blue.

Kmart Blacktown and Mr Druitt always looks like this. And they’re 24 hour stores.

Slow news day at Yahoo.

What is Panda Mart and apparently it’s opening it’s 1st store in Australia at Cranbourne Victoria in 2 or 3 weeks does anyone know about this?

Google is your friend. Seems to be a bargain shop described as cheap and junky.

Panda Mart is a South African-based retailer that sells a wide range of products, including groceries, beauty and health products, home decor, electronics, and toys. Panda Mart operates in multiple countries, including Australia.

Generally stores in Melbourne and Sydney’s west look like this. Was a pyramid stack of shoes on the floor at the Highpoint store I was other week. The fitting rooms was an eye opener. Why are people so lazy, disgraceful behaviour.

I’m referring to a combination of both bogan westie behaviour and the staff not having time to properly restock. There are trolleys full of stock to be stacked everywhere. Being 24 hours does not allow time for anyone to properly stack the product. There’s no need for a 24 hour store. Close at midnight and clean up the store.

Wages and electricity costs, especially lighting, would be quite significant for those overnight shifts, hard to see how it’s worth it.

I assume they have little staff on, ie self serve only. From memory they have a security guard on these shifts also so that just adds to the cost.

Exactly. I suspect that’s what forced the 24 hout Kmart in Waratah (just up from McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle) started to close.

A 24 hour Kmart isn’t exactly needed. Even out n Blacktown or Mt Druitt. Areas where Housos looks more like a documentary instead of a extremely funny comedy.

I’m just trying to work out the target market here. Is it just people who are bored and go off and do a Kmart wreckie in the middle of the night? Supermarkets offer the essentials and are often open 6am-12pm.

I just think if they pulled back the hours, revenue wouldn’t really move, and well, costs would certainly be pulled back.

I somewhat think it’s more a perception and publicity thing. 24hrs makes them show their dominance in the market.

I feel for the staff, I can only imagine some of the creatures that venture through the doors at 3am. I’ve seen some interesting scenes during the daylight hours let alone night. The only real store which I think one can justify 24hrs is the Woolworths at Brisbane Airport. Western Sydney might get a new 24hr supermarket when that airport opens, might be an opportunity in Tullamarine also however zoning is an issue.

Target market - crack addicts, welfare whales, potheads, paedos, vampires…anyone else?

I agree, going back from 24 hour operation for Kmart is a good idea. I reckon there are cost savings to be made. 24 hour supermarkets that are run efficiently wouldn’t be a bad idea, but still, you can justify going 6am-midnight.
