Supermarkets and Retail

Here’s a question about something I saw today. I had to duck into Kmart to pick up a few things that I left behind in Brisbane before starting work in my companies Perth office tomorrow.

One guy near me was buying a few button up shirts and when he walked out he kept them on the hanger and just slung them over his shoulder.

So my question is this - if you buy clothes from Kmart, target or Big W do you expect to keep the hangers? I always pop them in the baskets they have

Not me … I don’t … I put them back in the basket.

I guess that’s one of the reasons why they sell hangers separately in packs of 5 or 10 usually.

I used too, but i now have so many hangers and not enough clothes so nope…

Although i did find out that major companies throw those hangers in the bin! What a waste.

They don’t, well, Kmart at least don’t. They get thrown into a massive pallet sized box and sent to Tic Group and they get reused.

I didn’t get a pic, but big w had a digital billboard thing as you entered asking people to leave the hangers in store.

Similar situation at Big W, yes the hangers get thrown into a recycling blue bin, but they do get eventually reused, apart from the broken ones of course.

Booktopia has entered voluntary administration after failing to secure emergency funding.

In an ASX announcement today, the book retailer said it had appointed McGrathNicol partners Keith Crawford, Matthew Caddy and Damien Pasfield to oversee the company’s restructuring.

“The Administrators are undertaking an urgent assessment of Booktopia’s business while options for its sale and/or recapitalisation are explored,” the statement reads.

Tim Gurner, Qualitas take control of Jam Factory after $180m raising

https://www.commercialrealestate.com.au/news/tim-gurner-qualitas-take-control-of-jam-factory-after-180m-raising-1299078/

The revised Gurner-Qualitas plans for the Jam Factory include 15,000 square metres of commercial office space, more 20,000 square metres of retail, a new Village Cinemas complex, two hotels and four residential towers, with a combined end value of $2.75 billion.

The Australian adds

While apartments will start from $750,000, they will range up to more than $30m for the penthouses, which would smash records in the city and top prices for landmark city towers.

The developer’s personal touches include a 10 metre-high library and lounge area, a large outdoor pool with formal gardens and tea house, a cigar lounge, afternoon tea drawing rooms and a large art collection along with Gurner’s much-vaunted wellness facilities.

Paddy’s Markets at Haymarket needs this new Food Hub development. I went there last week and noticed there are a lot of stalls still vacant since the pandemic. Also a lot less people there shopping than in the past.
