Supermarkets and Retail

The IGA at Peregian Beach has a fridge full of offers from The Cheesecake Shop. The Cheesecake Shop was quintessential 90s!

There are Cheesecake shop products in Coles too.

There are shops still around though.

A brand that belongs in supermarkets tbh considering everything they sell is made at a central location, frozen then thawed and par-baked in-store.

This reminds me of Foodworks selling Lenard’s products.

I thought it had been a while since I have seen a Lenards store, turns out there are only 2 in Victoria and they are both regional locations. What happened to them all, they used to be a staple of pretty much every major shopping centre.

That’s a lot of stains :flushed:

It doesn’t seem all that clear, it just looks like that a significant percentage of franchisees decided to close rather than proceed in recent years.

They seem to have had some ownership / management turbulence and the last lot of PR I saw discussed changes to the franchise model.

The business model has become less viable over time as the major supermarket chains increased their range of heat and eat poultry items that was once Lenard’s main USP. Anecdotally the last time I saw one pricing was significantly higher than comparable items at Woolworths or Coles.

It’s a shame, I always liked the stuff from Lenard’s, but it’s near impossible to find now.

The closest thing to me used to be that one of the Richie’s IGAs would have a Lenard’s counter, but was quite a bit out of the way, but even that seems to be gone now.

It would make sense for them to get into the home delivery market in metro areas, even if it was like some of the smaller services that you only have slots certain days of the week - you’d cover more population without the overhead of the stores.

Chemist Warehouse has opened a spin-off called Optometrist Warehouse.

Not fond of Chemist Warehouse but looking forwarding to seeing how this goes - Luxottica and Specsavers effectively run a duopoly in this industry in this country.

Was Just Spectacles a thing in the eastern states or was it just a thing here in WA?

Specsavers’ success was in getting the private health funds to pay enough so they could no-gap multiple glasses.

interesting they are running essentially the chemist warehouse colour scheme and logo. might get lost in the shuffle as people look at it think its a chemist warehouse and move on

They still exist, but only a fraction of the locations, under the name Specs 2-4-1

I’ve never heard of Luxottica.

They are the parent brand of OPSM.

I have just had the worst experience with them.

They’re a heavily vertically integrated multi-national company that manufactures and retails glasses / sunglasses. In Australia from an optometry perspective, through Laubman & Pank / OPSM and globally through Sunglass Hut for sunglasses.

I had an American Coke bottle in my luggage coming back from Hawaii.

For smaller bottles, they sell it in fluid ounces (fl oz). Oddly, larger volumes are still sold in “liters”.

On the left below is the American 20 fl oz bottle, which is 591 ml. On the right is the Australian 600 ml bottle. So only 9 ml difference.

The American bottle is shorter but wider compared to ours, a bit our relative phyisques I guess!
