Supermarkets and Retail

Also noticed you cannot pay with Flypay on both the old and new Coles website … used to be able to do it on the old …

I can earn flybuys points but cannot redeem them online now.

Just noticed Dairy Farmers Milk 3l is now $2.17 a litre and Pauls is $2.10 ! Woolies has put the price up for Pauls but not for Dairy Farmers yet.

“Eighty per cent of our customers currently bring in their own bag, so over the number of years, I think customers have really responded to reusing bags,” he said.

“Also, a number of our customers are electing to actually not use bags at all.”

He said the store would continue to offer alternative options, such as paper, fabric and chill bags.

That’s interesting to learn. I always thought Asian countries dined out more based on how many restaurants and diners I’d seen when travelling.

Top 10 countries where people eat out the most each week:

  • USA (3.6 times)
  • Italy (3.4 times)
  • China (2.6 times)
  • France (2 times)
  • United Arab Emirates (2 times)
  • UK (1.6 times)
  • Germany (1.1 times)
  • India (1.1 times)

I would have thought Australia would be on that list … Interesting that India is on it given a lot of their country is poor.

A lot of Americans start their day eating out for breakfast. A lot more chain stores there compared to the more cafe like culture here.

It’s quite a bit more expensive to buy fresh food at supermarkets in the US then it is in Australia and other countries. Sometimes it’s even cheaper to buy food out. It definitely does not help with the obesity epidemic. I did notice it when I was over there for work for a month a few years ago. For example Chobani Greek yoghart 1kg tubs was roughly the same price in a King Scoopers Supermarket in Denver then it was at Woolworths here and that was in US dollars so with currency conversion it would have been quite a bit more expensive.

Follows on from the discussion about eateries in department stores. A moderator can move my comment and the following discussion to the ‘Fast Food/Takeaways and Restaurants’ thread, if they wish.

They still have those thin plastic vege bags and they still sell bags for rubbish bins.

Catch still struggling. Wonder how long Wesfarmers will keep throwing cash at it. Not the first time a business takes over the little guy and lines it with consultants and what not. You could say they have invested too much to walk away.

It’s no wonder. I bought a few things from Catch a few years back because they had products that were cheaper than department stores or supermarkets. Every time I check out their products these days, they are more expensive than everywhere else.

Catch seems core to Wesfarmers Onepass offering, I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon even if it’s bleeding a ton of cash. I think Wesfarmers would fold its operations into Kmart or Target before selling it.

Businesses like Catch and Kogan were always going to be extremely vulnerable to Amazon becoming more mature in the Australian market as well as online offerings from almost all other existing Australian based bricks and mortar businesses significantly improving due to the pandemic.

One Pass annual is $3.33 a month I am considering it for a few items. I notice stuff like the cleaning product i buy, dishwasher tablets and some pizza sauce (in a triple pack ) are cheaper than the supermarket. Reject Shop is dearer for dishwasher tablets nowdays.

One cleaning spray White King I want to buy goes on special for quite a bit off at Chemist Warehouse but it seems to be only every few months … am waiting until the next sale otherwise will buy it on Catch .

In general Amazon is easier to deal with. If you have issues it’s very easy to return your items. Kogan do not have a good reputation in regards to after sales service. They need to address that and change that reputation if they really want to compete with Amazon.

Remember when Catch was just one deal, daily @ 12pm? Good times.

And the deals were actually good deals.

That’s when you should buy 2 or 3 and store them in your cupboard. I noticed things like Vanish, Pine O Cleen and Glen 20 have started going on sale at ½ Price at Woolies again. That’s when you buy 2 or 3 rather than wait until they’re on special again.

Ahh yes. Correct me if wrong, but I think it was called ‘Catch of the day’ way back wasn’t it?
