Supermarkets and Retail

I noticed in my local Woolies that they’ve permanently closed the in-store Cafe, must have been recent because it was operating last weekend

Since the store opened, Woolworths has gradually ditched every point of difference the store had against the other store in town when it opened.

Yeah, the cafe in our Woolies didn’t last long. The sushi section still does well with it’s daily freshly made sushi.

The bakery seems to be struggling a bit too. They don’t seem to have as wide a range of freshly baked bread, rolls and pastries as they used to.

What a coincidence, the in store cafe at the Woolworths in Bowral had also closed permanently. Mittagong never had the in store cafe, probably since it was in a shopping centre and there is a food court nearby.

I’ve only ever see one in-store cafe for Woolies over here in WA, at the Joondalup location. Which always seemed like an odd choice in a large shopping centre.

New standalone builds in inner suburbs (Mt Pleasant, Highgate) have instead leased space for a cafe just out the front of the store.

Now a 50 dollar min

I don’t get the uproar, it is a bit over the top. I mean 20/30/40/50 years ago we had to use our two legs and actually go in to buy things, then walk out. Is a Labour cost for staff to walk around the store picking and packing then walking the order to your car.

The media word some of these articles like it’s the ending of planet earth for some people. Truly ridiculous.

I am amazed they don’t charge a fee for the service. I am pretty sure I got charged a fee recently for using Kmart click and collect.

I ordered a hard drive from a local computer store online for collection from the store the next day. Somehow the order got flagged as a regular online order so wasn’t available to collect from the store the next day. They tried to charge me a fee for them to collect the hard drive from the warehouse and deliver it to the showroom. It was totally ridiculous since it was their fault. They didn’t end up charging me but I haven’t been back to that store since. I buy computer stuff regularly so they have missed out. I don’t think any one should be charged for collecting items from a shelf. But yes i understand it isn’t worthwhile for small orders hence the $50 limit.

They also don’t have any real understanding of the true benefits of such a service and the impact such a change has. This change will have real impacts on people who can’t (for whatever reason) trapse around the supermarket, the low cost of entry is a bit of a covid hangover though.

But then again these are the same groups that amplify bullshit social media posts of people having a whinge that you can buy precut fruit and veg at the supermarket now without appreciating that for some people it makes that food practical and something they can use

Its 18 year old ‘journos’ who troll Twitter for outrage and then write articles about it.

There should be some MediaWatch investigation into this as its showing up all day, every day now.

The old Coles shopping site is down

And trying the new site the bought before section after loading you can’t add anything and it is listing specials from last week that aren’t on special anymore!

Seems back up now. Does Coles site show things as available so you add the item to your cart only for the item to show as unavailable when you go through to the checkout 20 minutes later. This happens all the time on the Woolworths app. It’s annoying and they need to do something about it. Maybe if there is only 2 items left in stock of a relatively popular item show as not in stock to avoid this from happening.

I saw something on the Woolies site when I tried to add multiple of something and at the bottom (this was on the webpage) it says only 2 left . I think from memory it was coffee capsules.

I have sometimes bought something at Coles on the web and then when gone to pick up it’s come up as unavailable when it was picked a day later.

Whilst in Hawaii, I went to the Ala Moana Shopping Center today.

All 4 main department stores (Bloomingdales, Macys, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom) have in store restaurants and/or cafes.

In Australia, the only department store that I’ve seen that still has one is Myer in Sydney CBD. Not sure if there are still any others?

Americans love dining in department stores/malls. Been a tradition for ages.

Macy’s in NYC has at least half dozen food options.

The Myer at Chadstone in Melbourne also has a food and wine bar located on the ground floor.

The same in the UK. M&S has dine in as do the fancier ones in London city.
