Supermarkets and Retail

Agreed. Wasn’t given long enough of a chance before Guy Russo came in and attempted to turn the store format into a very slightly more upmarket Kmart.

Noticed a QR code on the eftpos machine at Woolies today, for Everyday Pay. Not sure it’s something I’d be keen on

Seems relatively pointless.
The main demographic I suspect this will be useful for is those that buy WISH cards at 5% off through various means (employer / union benefit groups, entertainment card, etc) as this system will make things significantly easier than fumbling with individual eGiftcards as you have to do now, as it allows multiple gift cards to form a cumulative balance up to $3499.

I suspect they have someone on their fintech team who must really like WeChatPay / AliPay to invest this much into it.

I thought EFTPOS was doing something similar for smaller retailers Coles etc. I don’t understand the point when we have Google and Apple Pay.

The Trolley Data Management Network (TDMN) has developed a coinless shopping trolley lock and GPS tracking system that could prevent trolleys being dumped in streets, carparks or waterways - a problem that costs councils and businesses thousands each year to remove or repair.

The Australian-owned and made tech works when users first unlock the trolley via the sMart Shop App.

Then by scanning a QR code, a $2 deposit is made to unlock the trolley and that money is given back once the trolley is returned and relocked.

Great, another bloody app which may have spyware in it (the number of apps snooping for info on the phone they don’t need to for their purpose is shocking), but even if it doesn’t, then it’s another app we’d have to give our payment card details to, etc.

Cafes at Target really made the place pop, read a real disappointment when they were ditched.

The only thing that I can see it offers is the ability to put Woolies gift cards into a digital payment option - you can get your Everyday Rewards card via Apple Pay (and im guessing Google Pay)

I saw the QR Code and promo on a self-checkout earlier this week - I assumed it was some sort of BNPL scheme

This is Woolworths data mining, pure and simple.

Do trolley locks still exist? I’ve lived in many areas across QLD and NT over the years and haven’t seen them in nearly 10 years.

Coles in Darwin has the wheel locking system (front right wheel locks when you attempt to leave the carpark).

Yeah, I see them fairly often in Vic - however lots of supermarkets just pre unlock all of them, with it seemingly just being a way to help push multiples at once.

The problem is that $1 is often just not enough of a deposit to be worth someone’s effort in returning the trolley.

I just keep around the tokens for when they are actually locked.

If I come across a supermarket with trolley locks I make a mental note to avoid it in future - I am too bad at remembering to take a coin with me (especially annoying if the supermarket is in a big shopping centre or a long walk from the carpark).

Yes. Most near me in Sydney have them now. Woolworths Rockdale just introduced them just a few weeks ago.

Woolworths and Aldi have tokens you can put on your key ring so you always have them with you.

I don’t like carrying a big bundle of keys around (literally just carry my car and front door keys).

It’s the supermarkets loss - if I get there and can’t access a trolley then they only get a baskets worth of my business (not much of a loss frankly given I’m only shopping for one).

Well, that’s all I have and my side gate key. They’re on a key ring with a token like this one.

I guess it’s been mentioned in here before, however the Kmart at Highpoint in Melbournes West opens December 1. They have taken the second level of David Jones which is now just operating on Level 3 only.

Target closed and that area will be refreshed with new tenants. I’ve seen a couple mentions of either Coles or Rebel Sport going into the space.

Strange decision to put it in that section of the centre when we all know Kmart isn’t high end store.

Has more brand presence than any other brand that could fit in that anchor space though.
