There was a suggestion that Bunbury that could close. Mirrabooka was posted on here after some stuff that was mentioned on social media, but elsewhere there has been no announcements.
Have the Big W closures slowed as they’ve waited to see how the Target shutdowns/conversions are progressing? Big W seem to have bounced back a bit during the last year of the pandemic after posting ordinary results in 2018/19.
Makes sense, especially when you see the new builds that Woolworths have recently completed that have a large designated pickup / direct-to-boot area. Excellent idea in areas with a population too small to support a Big W, as long as the returns process is seamless if anything goes wrong.
Woolworths opened its newest store last week, at a former industrial building in Melbourne’s Fisherman’s Bend, south of West Gate Freeway. $14.5 million redevelopment comprises a market-style full-line supermarket, a Dan Murphy’s outlet, a cafe and a place for food trucks.
Looks good and they have a zoned area for direct to boot. I have never ever seen anyone use this direct to boot while I am at my local, who has 2 bays. Probably more suited to places like Dans/Kmart/Bigw. The last few times I have used direct to boot at Bigw I had about 4 cars ahead of me.
I wouldn’t mind direct to boot here, it’s only in selected stores where I am. I think a couple of Wooworths in Rockhampton have them but not all.
Kind of annoying when you press the "Im on my way " and “I’m here” on the SMS alert and arrive and then they still don’t have the order ready and you have to wait nearly 10mins… yet when I go to Coles I ring a number and very quickly someone comes out and offers to load it into bags and into the car .
At Woolies with pick up you sometimes have to wait while the smokers buy their cigarettes or someone is returning something .
It was the opposite experience with my Coles order. Waited 40 minutes after ringing the service desk for my order to be brought out. Of course all the designated spots were filled with illegal parkers.
Perhaps they need fo have staff dedicated to this function not loading up existing staff doing existing jobs to deal with it. It’s all about sweating existing assets I guess (staff) without actually increasing the wage bill.
NZ has to import a lot more of its food from elsewhere than Australia does, plus economies of scale considering the small population - also even if the prices were identical, they have a 15% GST opposed to our 10%.
Yes when I lived there in the 90s i don’t think the GST was that high it was 10 percent. then went to 12.5 percent.
Guess the government here is to afraid of being voted out and losing voters putting GST on fresh food and vegetables… hasn’t been an increase here in GST for just over 20 years.
I don’t think fruit and vege should be part of GST in Australia or NZ.
Nor should there ever be. It’s not a fixed price, it’s a percentage, so I see no reason to increase it.
Sales taxes are regressive; a low level (like 10%) is fine, but it’s better to tax income (on a progressive scale. Have those who can afford it, pay a little more).
But the first thing a government wanting more revenue should do is reduce/eliminate those huge loopholes, unnecessary concessions, and subsidies.
GST in general is a tax that disproportionately affects the poor and although we’re forced to endure it at the present time I hope it never increases or expands in scope from where it is today.
It’s probably got something to do with people avoiding public transport in favour of driving everywhere (probably the biggest factor) and lower numbers in CBD offices, so mall pedestrian traffic is waaaay down.
