Supermarkets and Retail

Anecdotally this is the biggest factor. Commute to work on public transport and prior to the current lockdown peak travel had rebounded - not to pre-COVID levels, but I’d say about 70% of what they were. The thing is that of those commuting, most aren’t destined for the CBD.

Off-peak is a different story altogether mind you.

After months of delay, Scentre Group today finally revealed plans for the first phase of renovation of Knox City shopping centre in Melbourne’s outer east. It will include a new Aldi supermarket, which will join Woolworths in the centre’s supermarket expansion on the first floor, replacing Myer. The first phase will also include a fresh food market near the new supermarkets, a casual dining precinct with outdoor children’s play area surrounded by a cafe.

Is Myer closing completely?

No, Myer is only closing its Knox City store completely at the end of this week. Its nearby store at Eastland shopping centre is still operating.

I think @jason120au as asking whether Myer was closing all levels at Knox, or staying on in some reduced capacity, not if Myer itself was closing all stores.

Just to clarify, all levels of Myer at Knox (the top floor is already vacant) will close.

Tomorrow, Karrinyup Shopping Centre in Western Australia will be opening the first part of it’s redevelopment. These include: New Coles and Aldi stores at the Myer end of the centre and more than 60 new stores at the David Jones end.

Karrinyup will become the 2nd biggest centre in Perth upon completion of the current expansion.

109,000 sqm of retail space sits just under the 110,000 at Carousel. Still well below major centres in the east, but way better than what was previously on offer.

10 screen Hoyts Cinema and entertainment precinct will open later this year.

Karrinyup/Innaloo face the same issue as Whitford City/Lakeside in that they’re in the same council areas, Stirling and Joondalup respectively.

It appears both councils tend to favour one centre over the other. Innaloo’s plans look dead and buried, while Whitford had issues with expansion plans in the past.

Still waiting for Booragoon and Morley to be re-looked at. Also, would love to see the Cockburn plans again.

Innaloos deferral had nothing to do with local government approval issues, in fact all their plans were approved practically every step of the way.

Not going to happen until the centre owners are willing to splurge on CAPEX again, though surprised that Scentre invested in Booragoon and have done practically nothing when it comes to a refurb / expansion.

I’m still convinced that Vicinity only submitted the plans for Galleria to get Water Corp to move its basin / infrastructure now so that when they do decide to go ahead that they don’t have to wait for that.

Hope that happens in the next few years. Garden City has been pretty poor for a few years now I really don’t like going up there.

It’s such an incredible fall from grace, was one of the most lucrative centres (in terms of spend per customer visit) in the country 10-15 years ago only to now be extremely run down and practically falling to bits.

I used to love going there when I was younger but the last few years it’s just been really sad. For the most part it really hasn’t changed all that much and more or less looks how it looked 15 years ago apart from store closure/changes.

I have heard otherwise. Innaloo would have been done by now, had it not been for City of Stirling dragging its feet. It’s a tricky situation there with the Stephenson Ave/Mitchell Freeway upgrade.

Scentre got frustrated and invested in the higher performing Garden City instead.

Centre owners would be brave to plan any new expansions in this current climate. Notwithstanding, Cockburn will likely be next for an upgrade. Apparently two competing cinema complexes are planned. One at Gateway and other outside the centre.

Scentre amended their proposal 4 times in which CoS and the State DAP approved each time, and the overall development has been approved by relevant parties since 2015.

Doesn’t sound like feet-dragging to me. Especially since Scentre claimed to be diverting funds for the Booragoon redevelopment, and almost 2 years later they have not released anything about making a start on this.

That cinema at Gateways will be nice and convenient, When I want to see a movie I go into Freo so it can be a bit of a pain.

They won’t admit it, but Stirling also equally made things hard for Innaloo to get up.

Historically, there were plans to include an Aldi supermarket at Event Cinemas Liege St site, then things went quiet.

Plenty of commentators also questioned the long term viabilty of such a development at Innaloo given the expansion at nearby Karrinyup. The situation would have had two full line David Jones stores within 4km of each other as well as a total of 28 cinema screens across two complexes.

By comparison, Myer/David Jones at Garden City and Carindale in Brisbane are 7km apart.
