Supermarkets and Retail (2015-2025)

Like all the Aussies on sunrise and 7 news moving to Bali and Thailand living in huge villas and saying life is so great and cheap compared to Australia!

Try doing that on a local wage. The only reason you can afford a villa with a chef in Bali is thanks to your Australian wages

Spare a thought for us in UK.

Our wages in Uk are lower than Oz and our houses food and cars and petrol more expensive

Not to mention your weather, miserable.

(That’s the weather I’m refering to, not you.).

Even worse than I imagined when I moved here.
I choose to live In London for 3 main reasons

  1. After NYC it’s the most exciting and dynamic English speaking city on the world
  2. It’s an entertainment / creative hub (my career)
  3. I can finish work at 4pm on Friday and be in Barcelona Lisbon Greece Paris or Ibiza by 8.30pm having dinner

For these huge for me main reasons - I put up with the broken economy and bad weather. Lisbon is 2 hours and AUD$80 away

Have you done this yet?

With London traffic, you’ll probably be lucky to get just to Heathrow by 8.30.

Eurostar from St Pancras.

I do it every 2 weeks.
Normally not Heathrow though.
Europe flights go out of other airports mostly
It’s 45-60mins from my door to Heathrow, Luton, Stansted and Gatwick
Not bad
I live in Canary Wharf. To London City Airport it’s a 13 minute drive.
30 cities nonstop.

Damn straight.

I’ve gotta say, I’ve been finding myself going to Colesworths in lieu of getting takeaway. Anyone else doing that or am I the weird one?

I’ve already eaten them

That’s really cool. So do you just decide “ooh, I’m gonna go to Paris this weekend” and then hop on a plane? I really like that idea. I admire anyone who has the drive to just do something, or go somewhere, out of nowhere. And no better place to do that from than London.

Not quite that loose! Haha. I look 4-6 weeks out for sales and discounts. You can fly to Barcelona; Lisbon, Palma; Florence; Madrid, Geneva etc for as little as A$100 round trip or 18,000 British airways Avios points.

My boss lets me work remote as long as I’m contactable so it’s pretty easy to work from a cafe in Spain or Italy Mondays and Fridays.

I normally fly back to London early Tuesday morning and go right to the office.

This is the life I want. And why I put up with broken Britain and the weather!

Back to supermarkets before I get yelled at for going off topic!

No cost of living crisis in the Southern Downs.

Cheapest fuel in Australia.

Living in Canary Wharf is why your housing is so expensive. Come out west.

Where do you live? @TVHead

I just bought a place In Canary Wharf. I used to live in Notting Hill.
West London ain’t cheap either!

Not far, in the Borough of Ealing. I have noticed a dramatic increase in grocery prices here since moving a few years ago. It was fairly cheap in 2021, now it’s the same price as it was when I left Australia, but in GBP, and as you say, lower salaries.

I still find groceries in London cheap - especially relative to salaries.

Eating out - even a shake shack or five guys is very expensive

And rent / mortgage is very expensive

My salary halved when I came here from the US. Literally halved.

especially relative to Australia.

Woolworths website is down
