The solution here is just to have unflogged classic hits playing across the network. Honestly the talkback on the Super Radio network is just so bad I don’t know how people in Caralis markets listen to it.

They don’t, based on most ratings I’ve seen.

I’m in Yamba today where my choice is 2GF or FM1047. The newly converted to FM legacy station has talkback from Sydney and FM1047 has a very haphazard music selection from 40 years of music that just doesn’t flow or sound nice.

As soon as I get out of radio range of Paradise FM I switch to iPad.

Most wouldn’t. They may be but one of two commercial radio choices, doesn’t mean many do. Plenty more options online or simply audio doesn’t feature highly in those regions.

They are producers on weekends. More so phone-operators depending on rostering etc

TLC 93.5 Yamba has some decent programming. I daresay the community stations do quite well in Caralis only markets; 88.9 Tamworth springs to mind.

In Tamworth’s defense, I actually think 92.9 & 2TM do quite a decent job locally. 92.9 is local pretty much all day during the week, and Saturday mornings. And 2TM does a really decent coverage of the annual Country Music Festival.

Maybe other BOG markets like Toowoomba, Noosa & Gunnedah are more questionable (but luckily Gunnedah has stronger performing sister stations NowFM/2VM and 92.9/2TM overlapping for a local alternative).

I just detest talkback dribble 21 hours a day. I’d rather a well crafted music playlist like XLFM/GLFM. Much nicer and easier to have on in the background all day.

And it’s not just about the music. It’s mostly music with local news, weather updates and other useful information. That’s something Spotify still can’t do.

Getting rid of all the rubbish programming from New FM and 2SM for a start.

A strong local presence? They rarely make any reference to the 2 local rugby league teams, no longer take the Group 2 Rugby League finals and the community station sponsored the Grafton show this year.

Getting rid of irrelevant talk back networked from over 600km away needs to happen sooner rather than later. That’s the only way it will stay relevant to locals.

I know 2RE Taree are local at breakfast and then 12-6pm weekdays (I think). They play some great music during their local afternoon shifts.

Is 2GF in a position where they can consider doing something similar?

my instruction to my staff this year was to be “hyper-local” which started off with major sponsorships of the South Grafton Rebels, Grafton Sporting Car Association, Yamba Surf Life Saving Club. We’re in talks with the Lower Clarence Magpies and the Grafton Redmen for next season. The Grafton Show Society is on the cards for next year,

Okay for context, I’m a long time lurker, first time poster… my name is Cam - I have been working there for the last 17 years and have recently picked up the reigns from the recently retired Paul Covington as acting GM, furthering my role on from Content Director.

Your comment on “getting rid of network programming” is a generic whinge we hear all the time and simply not on the cards whether we like it or not - that one is completely out of our hands, as it would be for any other network. We have no quality control over that.

I’m 100% committed to trying to improve the overall sound and engagement of the stations - that’s why I often trawl this forum - as an amazing resource due to the wealth of knowledge from a collective group of what I would consider great industry knowledge!

I’m always up for suggestions/constructive criticism!

Cam is a great broadcaster and I’ll 2nd everything he said as someone who is basically in the same boat at the other end of the Gwydir Highway. Keep going my friend

No problems! Streaming is one of the many things on my list - we have the capabilites and facilities to do it, just no green light. And I’m not the only one on the network that has that one on their wish list!

It would be nice to see it in radio app. Anyway one step at a time . This opening a bit of hornets nest but really appreciate you posting in mediaspy.
