Super Radio Network

Historically 2HC just broadcast just networked content and then ACMA forced them to broadcast locally 3 hours a day. As a result they probably didn’t have a proper studio so it would make sense that it would come from one of the near by Super Radio Network stations. Does the Orange station run the same way?

I thought the 3 hours per day had to be broadcast from within the licence area… Perhaps Covo split his time between Coffs and Grafton.

The legislation for the “material of local significance” says:

Material is material of local significance if it:
(a) is hosted in; or
(b) is produced in; or
(c) relates to;
the licence area of the regional commercial radio broadcasting licence

So it could be hosted and produced outside of the licence area, just so long as the actual material relates to the area itself.

2HC do have a studio in Coffs Harbour - it’s on the highway opposite the Showground.

I live in Coffs Harbour and worked in both Coffs and Grafton. The local program was produced for broadcast most days from either my home studio or at the Coffs Harbour studio itself. As stated elsewhere the local program can be produced outside of the licence area but the material must be relative to the local area. As the local news is produced for both markets and with today’s technology it is fairly easy to obtain content. It is not unusual to have an announcer from another station fill in for holidays or sick leave. It is much better for the local market than taking a network program.

Congrats @Paul_Covo_Covington on a great career, Bill was lucky to have you. Enjoy your retirement, you’ve earned it!

According to the 2SM Super Network website Brent Bultitude is now presenting Weekend Mornings, with Pete Davis switching shifts to Weekday Afternoons.

Shuffling the deck chairs, no significant change of talent.

Would love to know why.

Brent is actually a pretty good announcer these days. Really at home on air.

Mind you, I look forward to hearing less “extended calls” go to air across the weekend.

His style of program will be a great alternative especially to Sydney talkback radio.

Seems a bit of demotion to me going from weekdays to weekends.

Could be a lifestyle related change, maybe Brent wanted it?

True. As I mentioned above, I’m most looking forward to hearing decent talkback on 2SM weekends from hereon. I hope Brent heavily filters the regulars.

Agree, it’s too many of the same callers on time after time.

Says to me though that they don’t have that many regular genuine callers.

Which is when/why they should play more music on the AM network.

Agree, assuming they play 4 songs an hour now, I’m not sure how much more it would cost to increase that to say 6 songs an hour, which should mean that they can just air the better calls. And maybe have a short interview here and there on a news related story.

As we know, the owner of the network appears to have an aversion to paying for music royalties (or for anything much else for that matter).

I don’t know for certain, but I’d say Brent wanted it, I’m pretty sure he’s gone deaf in one ear, so as you could imagine that would affect his presenting of the program 5 days a week, especially being a talkback/interview type show & needing headphones on pretty much the entire shift on air, not sure if he has some other thing he needs/wants regular time off during the week for either?
He also lives up the Hunter Valley (Cessnock/Wine Country area) & I think he was renting a place in Newcastle which he used during the week, then going home on weekends, maybe he didn’t want that added cost, & wanted to spend more time at home with his wife, so working 2 days of a weekend is much more suited to him now, & maybe Pete wanted more work & wanted weekends off, so it worked out best for both of them?

Well done to Brent Bultitude on SRN Weekend Mornings. He has shaken out all the bad long-winded callers and has semi-decent guests on his program.

Finally decent weekened listening on the AM network. Far from the days of Straight Talk with Poppy.

I liked Poppy, but yes, she had to put up with some awful callers.

I wonder if there is a different producer or process to now to help filter out the bad eggs?

I doubt there are any producers on weekends. Brent just doesn’t put up with boringness.

The solution here is just to have unflogged classic hits playing across the network. Honestly the talkback on the Super Radio network is just so bad I don’t know how people in Caralis markets listen to it.

Surely back-to-back music (similar to the ACE Radio model) is cheaper than paying 24/7 talkback announcers?
