Humiliating?

Do you think Shirvo was humiliated?

I would be - in what world would a boss seriously ask you to come on when you’re on holidays to phone in to talk to the people covering for you.

Embarrassing for “Shirvo” and embarrassing for David that he has to bring in the man he’s covering to talk about his summer holidays.

Did they do it to Nat the Friday before she returned?

Ultimately, it’s Shirvo’s own fault. He’s on holidays he didn’t have to answer when work called him. He could have also made something up that he wasn’t home or something.

This is television, not the real world. Publicity stunts like this drive long-term audience engagement and trust.

Today Show in America basically documented Savannah’s entire time off getting surgery. She called in writing her answers on a white board.

I recall Sunrise phoning in to Eddy when she was on maternity leave.

It’s not the first time and wont be the last. It was legit after 9am on Friday. An inconsequential segment but effective segment, building on the ‘Sunrise Family’.

What’s humiliating for you (clearly you have quite a low threshold) isn’t necessarily humiliating for others.

Is the personal jab necessary? You’re smart enough Andrew to make your point without resorting to this.

Not a personal jab, David.

I’m discussing the use of the word ‘humiliation’, or in this case, misuse.

Jesus Christ it’s been 3-4 days since he did the interview and we are still trying to dissect the reasons behind him doing it?

There is a very big difference between taking unexpected time off to deal with health issues and your common garden variety summer holidays. Many viewers would be genuinely interested in knowing that someone they wake up with regularly is doing well and will be OK. I really don’t see many people caring about what they do on holidays.

Agreed with you there , and even if Shirvo was involved in the stunt , he didn’t have to answer the phone on a Publix holiday.

Well he didn’t - he did the interview on Friday.

But your point still stands

Regardless, it’s someone phoning in on their leave.

In Shirvo’s case, it was a 2 minute segment just before the show wrapped up.

It was not a ‘humiliation’, I doubt Shirvo felt ‘humiliated’ and nobody was hurt in the process (particularly not 7’s ratings on Friday).

So I think we’re all good?

I agree that I wouldn’t go as far as calling it humiliating. I would question whether it is actually needed though. I just don’t see the genuine interest in what he did over his holidays.

I’m pretty sure the purpose of the segment was to promote his impending return to the show, wrapped up in a ‘what did you get up to on your holiday’ question.

And my bet is people watching after 9am on Friday are probably the type of viewers who watch the show for it’s presenters and entertainment value rather than for a news hit.

Wasn’t Shirvo originally due back tomorrow?

Yes

Who writes the captions for the black line of text on the straps? Someone on staffs 14yo daughter?

Those are slightly different - the man was on holidays not surgery or similar where there is a natural inclination to let people in on the news (if comfortable). Let the on air team charged with hosting that day broadcast rather than have David look over their shoulder. If I was “Shirvo”, I would have said see you next Tuesday when asked too.

It also suggests we don’t have confidence in our fill-ins so we have to keep the usual guy looking over their shoulder. I stand by use of humiliating - if I was on holiday and my boss rang me to speak to the guy covering me…I’d be wondering wtf she/he was on.

Also, you have been here for some years but surely you can’t still buy the ‘Sunrise Family’ rubbish which died when they gassed Melissa about a decade ago.
