Plus they still use him as their Olympic correspondent also for Milan 2026 Winter Olympics
As per News.com.au, doesnât sound like it was entirely his decision:
According to Seven insiders, Berettaâs card was marked last year during phase one of the companyâs widespread job slashing campaign.
Just six month into a new two-year contract at the time, Beretta escaped the initial round of cuts after accepting a salary haircut in the preceding years.
Sad to see Mark leave Sunrise but not surprised over the last 12 months and scaling back his commitment to the show.
I wouldnât be surprised if they save costs and keep Matt doing a dual role. Alternatively, Liam Tapper?
You can choose to believe that reduced days, less weekend fill in work, fewer network sport commitments and âspecial projectsâ next year is his decision. I choose not to.
Iâm not saying it is or isnât. But he wouldnât be the first person in the twilight of their working career in any industry to pare back their commitments as they head to retirement.
Iâm not much of a sport fan and I actually quite enjoy it when Matt does sport and hope it continues.
Berettâs last day will be on Friday December 12th.
Could work nicely having David Woiwod doing sport and being a general panel member on the desk for Thursday, Friday and Monday (allowing him to preview and debrief matches) and then host Weekend Sunrise on Sat and Sun
28/11/2025 David Woiwod is co-hosting with Nat in the studio, with Shirvo in Adelaide.
Would be surprised if Katie replaces berretes
Why are they doing another Shirvo vs racing car havenât they already done that at least twice before?
Annette Sharp wrote in her column this morning:
Mark Beretta is said to have been taken aback by the news his services were no longer required by Seven despite seeing his Sunrise commitments reduced to just two days a week at the start of the year.
Insiders claim the sports presenterâs sideline role as a social media influencer some time ago began wearing thin on his TV bosses.
Although broadly sanctioned by Seven, there are concerns among sales executives that some sponsored content that appears on the social media accounts of Seven stars may come at the expense to revenue that might normally flow directly into the traditional TV operationâs coffers.
I think if you have a really solid journalist in your team you show that off again and again.
Shirvo is a fast runner so heâs running again.
Strange that Mark cannot leave after 23 years, at Sunrise with a clear narrative that he wants to spend more time doing other things like his charity work, as he has started to do this year. And thereâs still speculation he is being pushed
Did you not read Annette Sharpâs article posted above? Very clearly a cost-cutting move.
Adding to that, this excerpt from the same article confirms there will be no replacement:
Seven, we hear, has no plans to replace the sportscaster whose contract was slashed in recent years from about $350k per annum to $250k.
Thatâs a really low salary for someone of his stature.
Given Shirvoâs sporting background it naturally makes sense that he can present the sports segment once Beretts departs the show.
He first filled in for him in September 2020.
And prior to Beretts joining the show in June 2004, the news presenter (Nat, in this case), also presented the sports headlines.
Pretty sure it was after the Olympics in 2004. Thatâs also when they commenced at Martin Place IIRC.
He had previously been main host with Georgie Gardner in an earlier version in 2000.
You lost me at Annette Sharp.
Many have taken a pay cut and if youâre only working 2 days a week, so be it.
