It was clear she was pressured to leave, however, it was her choice - she wasn’t told one morning that she was out.
Is that a fact? How do you know she wasn’t moved on?
I’m really curious to see what Weekend Sunrise looks like next year.
If the rumours about Eddy moving to 7 news are true we could see Mon in the weekday newsreader spot and 2 new hosts on weekends.
I wonder if this is why they were happy to let Matt go - Mon and Matt have great chemistry, but if Mon is gone anyway that was coming to an end regardless
Is Matt Doran’s wife still the EP of ‘TODAY’??
Wages are often the number one or two cost these days, it’s scrutinised pretty closely in most industries. I don’t think it’s been top of mind in TV land for a while, it’s clear thats changed in recent years. The days of plum contracts are gone, it’s all about productivity now. They will just cut those off who don’t want to sign on for what they offer now.
Sunrise always controls the narrative, that is how they are able to maintain such a tight and stable ship. You asked why some are assuming it wasn’t Matt’s decision- spending more time with family is such a classic line for this. You can believe that he wanted to leave but I don’t think you can totally dismiss the suggestion that Seven didn’t renew his contract amidst a year of multiple on air presenters being cut. I don’t think it is unreasonable at all.
Matt spoke about how much the support from the viewers, the team and Mon meant to him. I really hope the support is still super strong too once his finishes up his work here.
It is sometimes better to go quietly and on ‘script’ , rather than go out kicking and screaming pushing the whole contract not renewed like departure victim card. The public don’t really have much sympathy for those on multi hundred k contracts, it’s certainly image damaging if they go out the wrong way, after all , many are now unemployed, the idea is to get re employed isn’t it?
Always more to many departures also. We just see the on camera stuff. We don’t see the off camera. Good chance for some employers to offload staff is the end of contract periods who could be proving troublesome in the office.
I could see one of 2 options happening. Option A, Mon & Sally co-host with Liam Tapper taking over as newsreader / Eddy’s fill in. or Option B is, as a left of field option, Sam Mac takes over WS and filling in for Larry on TMS and we get a new weather presenter/Katie
No thanks can’t stand Sam Mac.
Sad to see Matt Doran leave Weekend Sunrise.
No doubt there were a combination of factors in making the decision. 5 years is a huge effort doing weekends. It helped that his wife Kendall was weekend Today EP for much of the time. Now that Kendall is EP of the Today show and would be rising very early on weekdays, it may have meant they weren’t seeing a lot of each other. So it sounds like that was the major factor.
He’s also been through a lot. He was passed over for Sunrise anchor when Kochie retired when the role was given to… a runner. A close friend and colleague off Matt’s also passed away recently and that can make you take stock of what’s important in life, particularly now being in his forties.
Seven is also winding down when you look at the 5 to 10 year horizon. The big money won’t be there for much longer.
Matt has significant career achievements in journalism, investigations, documentaries, presenting and news reading. I’m sure there are big things ahead for him and he will be missed.
Blake Johnson should get the gig to replace Doran, he’d be great!
Maybe Seven will poach Clint from Weekend Today
But who will file the aviation stories?
Only just found out about Doran. What a shame. I always thought he was really good. Though I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to get up at 4am anymore.
I must say, though, that I don’t know if we needed ~100 posts questioning whether it was his decision to leave or not. Bit of a slog to read through. The fact is he’s going, and IMO it’s a real shame. Hope to see him somewhere else soon.
Back to Ten or a new era on Nine??
I would like to see him reading the news on nine in sydney, time for a shake up there, him and Georgie would be a good fit whether together or alternating
I suppose it’s only fair, if you supply a car for a giveaway that you get a 5 minute “special report” on the show.
They must know this is a Media Watch spot waiting to happen…
The program was live outside the old Martin Place studios this morning, covering a flooded substation that caused a power outage in Sydney’s CBD. They took a quick look inside the old studios, highlighting the vacant space with its marble flooring. The contrast between the old and new studios was striking, emphasizing just how sterile and cold the new setup feels.
