Welcome to the new home of Brekky Central

Sunrise and The Morning Show make the move to South Eveleigh

Australia’s favourite breakfast TV show, Sunrise, has a new home following its move today to the Seven Network’s new newsrooms and studios in South Eveleigh.

The first edition of the new-look Sunrise went to air live at 5.30am this morning, and hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington, newsreader Edwina Bartholomew and sports presenter Mark Beretta are already right at home in their high-tech, purpose-built studios. The Morning Show’s Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies will also broadcast their first show from South Eveleigh later this morning.

7NEWS , 7NEWS Spotlight, The Latest and 7NEWS.com.au relocated from Martin Place in the Sydney CBD to South Eveleigh in late June.

The arrival of the Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise and The Morning Show teams means that for the first time in more than 40 years, the entire Seven Sydney operation and all broadcast and operational staff (across all departments) are now under one roof.

The brand-new news and public affairs facilities at South Eveleigh cover two expansive floors of Seven’s head office and are five times larger than the previous Martin Place location, with permanent sets for all programs.

Seven West Media Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, James Warburton, said: “After many years broadcasting from Martin Place – and 19 years as the #1 breakfast TV show across Australia – the time was right to build a new home for Sunrise and the rest of our market-leading Sydney News and Public Affairs programs.

“They might be in a new studio, but Nat, Matt and the rest of the team will continue to bring all of Australia the best, brightest and most informed breakfast TV program in the country. It’s great to have them all in South Eveleigh.”

Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson, said: “Today makes a landmark day for Seven’s news and public affairs division.

“For many years, we’ve been physically once removed from the rest of the network. Together alone. Not anymore. Sunrise and The Morning Show teams are now ensconced side by side with their 7NEWS colleagues and surrounded by the rest of the network.

“It may sound unremarkable, but for the workforce it has been a remarkable shift. Complimented by state-of-the art studios made for broadcast, what’s been created will set the standard for today and last well into the future,” he said.

Seven Network Director of Morning Television, Sarah Stinson, said: “Brekky Central has been an iconic part of Australian TV for two decades but the time has come to move to a new home.

“South Eveleigh allows us to bring world-class technology to breakfast television in a way that will enhance the experience for our much-loved viewers.

“From today, viewers will see a brighter and fresher look, but the heart of our shows will never change. Our teams will continue to bring the best coverage of news, sport, weather, entertainment and so much more – and we’ll continue to have a laugh as only Sunrise and The Morning Show can.”

Will Seven Sport have a studio there too?

Overall a pretty inoffensive refresh and new home for the show. There’s a lot to like, and a number of things that feel like they still need a bit tweaking.

Lower thirds feel like a colourful mock almost and not a fan of the solid top strap like that, needs a bit of reworking and assume we may see that in the weeks to come?

Not a fan of all the animations on the opener, feels a bit too much visually when you’re just trying to follow the headline. Also the date feels small in comparison.

Main set looks good, very bright. Really enjoyed the angles backdrops used during the travel segment with Nat, looked great. Don’t like the darker story specific backdrops, stick with one style and run with it.

Really don’t like the wavy set pieces either side of the big screen, seems outdated and we’ve seen it all before.

The soft set is okay, but that couch will look terrible soon enough as it gets marked and dirty. Also what’s with the weird coffee tables they insist on doing? Looks cheap, I get it’s supposed to mimic the sunrise, but less is more.

The space next to the soft set gives me Today vibes from their soft set but executed better.

Kudos to Seven. I reckon the best sets in a long time

First thoughts after scrolling here:

  • Set looks amazing
  • Good to have the ticker back
  • Nice that graphics are aligned with the 7News ones but they’ve gotta get rid of the black on orange

So much space. Can you hear me over there?

Soft set reminds me much of Today from 2012-2015 with yellow tones instead of orange and red.

Bit of confusion on the naming. One minute they are saying “Brekkie Central” was our home in press releases. Then on the opener it references Brekkie Central?

Good effort it still gives nbc vibes though. Not original at all but it’s good though , and thank god they turned down the orange.
The black text on the orange just looks weird. Doesn’t sit well but I suppose for contrasting that the black on the light orange is probably better for a description of the headline above .

6.1 out of 10.

A LOT of inspiration taken from the Today Show (USA), agreed

Finance screen just doesn’t look right without Kochie in front of it.

Great refresh overall. Unlike the Seven News desk, I actually can’t really complain about this one, nor the set.
The graphics need to be toned down in some spots - too many small animations. Supers need slight adjustments too but I don’t mind them.

Not sure why the leaks were saying the screens would be “integrated” into the set… this set has more videowall than Martin Place!
It’s a huge space too.

Shits all over Nine. No doubt they are going to react to this.
Nine will need to refresh that larger studio to work with Today.

Looks like they have robo-cams and a Jib/Steadi-cam operator on set.

Love the new look. People saying it’s “too American” are a bit odd, it’s just modern like UK sets too.

The only thing bothering me is the HEADLINE TEXT being bolder in Breaking banners, it should all be bold, looks better, and reads clearer.

Also it’s one of the best lit sets in the country – usually lighting is terrible in Australia.

I mean this really does look fantastic, such a refresh. White, Orange; Clean, contemporary, modern
Really says Australia’s News Breakfast home to me. Nine will need to up their game to compete.

Great work!
