What does everyone make of this? I only had to watch Sunrise last week for the first time in a couple of months to see why…
And for someone who did a wedding yesterday, I think they deserved to be defeated. I guarantee in the next few months and next year, we will have heaps ‘insider’ sources coming out saying their is a rift between the team on Today etc.
I also like how the author of that article, noted that when they had a great E.P. the show was great. TBH, I don’t think Pell will be flicked just yet, perhaps more team and format changes next year.

I was a sunrise viewer until this year, and have never watched Today by the way and don’t. They are too focussed on Entertainment, viral videos, cash giveaways and shit like that not to mention stupid skits. I don’t think Today will be number 1 for too long, but I think sunrise needs change. I think Sam Armytage needs to go, I am so sick of her laughing and giggling and I just don’t like her style, but, her best friend, who is ultimately responsible for Today becoming #1 will have her back. They both gotta go. Pell treats the show too much like The Morning Show. He did a wedding on TMS before joining sunrise, but a wedding on breakfast TV is horrendous! It’s not even a news show anymore (Today isn’t much better for the record).

I think there’s a good opportunity here for a low cost commercial news bulletin at breakfast time, without all the fluffy shit. Seems to be the audience is fragmenting, some to different channels & others turning off altogether.

Well the only broadcaster in a position to do that would be Ten, and they don’t have the physical nor financial resources to go there again.
Just putting it out there. Today did 3 weddings in the early to mid 2000’s all live on air. Tracy Grimshaw was also present for a woman giving birth. I don’t think the birth was done live, but part of the process was filmed for use on Today.
And to be frank, this was during a period when Today was more ‘newsier’ than it currently is. So for people to say that Sunrises attempt was gimmicky, history will tell you it’s already been done and was actually quite successful.

Sunrise was in its infancy stage, and was not a threat, so Today was still quite dominant
And then people seen sunrise and tasted it which was more newsier back then and the rest is history.
Nope. Sunrise didn’t start making inroads until David Koch and Melissa Doyle became Kochie and Mel, when the program became less formal and more about viewers interests

Anyway, the bottom line is, they didn’t do weddings, countless showbiz segments and constant viral videos.
Wow you really don’t know too much about how Sunrise became #1 do you? Sunrise became soo popular with viewers because of all the gimicky things they did. Today was often referred to as ‘lifeless’ and ‘too serious’ for breakfast.
Sunrise became popular due to its light hearted antics thrown in with audience feedback and of course regular news, sport and weather.
Please do yourself a favour, go out and purchase Adam Bowland’s book and it will tell you everything you need to know about how Sunrise became an unstoppable force. And just for the record, Sunrise did not become #1 for being more ‘newsier’ than Today.

Indeed. Back in the days before Sunrise became #1 and changed Australian breakfast TV, Today during the Liebmann/Grimshaw era was probably more formal, rigid and serious in it’s content/format than ABC News Breakfast is right now, let alone Sunrise or Today in their current incarnations.

This is why I really want ten to come in and do a breakfast news bulletin, I also watched sunrise until this year and switched to the ABC, and that’s saying a lot as I only used to watch maybe 5mins total in a year

I never said they should run a straight, serious news bulletin!
Of course, they should be ‘like a family’, light hearted and viewer oreinatated - I am not arguing against that, despite the fact you try and make it seem that way.
I DO NOT think that they should be showing a wedding on breakfast TV, they should not show countless cat videos and shit like that.
Go back to what worked when they were successful, stuff like the ROS wall and more viewer engagement as well as helping local communities. You cannot argue that there is more news on sunrise now then what they had when they became number 1 - because there isn’t! They knew when to be serious back then and when to present the news, that’s why Mel was great in the role, but Sam seems to think she is presenting the morning show and is constantly laughing - sunrise used to spend the last hour with more light hearted stuff.
I was a solid sunrise viewer back then! It’s sad to see what has happened and there are so many people I know that are the same. Michael Pell & Sam, it’s time to go.
Nat Barr to replace Sam, Eddy to news which would also remove Eddys current role which is good. Social media reaction to Sam Mac is not good either and I think his time is up!
For the record - I have read Bolands book and know more about the inner workings of sunrise than you may think.
