Sunrise (2015-Sept 2020)

Maybe Sam is moving to four days as part of cost-saving at Seven?

I don’t think anyone is/would dispute that. The criticism is more about the risk that the number of changes will upset the habitual audience, negatively affecting the ratings.

Should be the team, precisely for this reason. Not keen on the new billboards with just the two hosts.

That would even messier. Two hosts one day, three the next.

Despite 7 saying that she requested the shortened week last year, it makes you wonder if this is was the condition for her to accept the 20% pay cut recently. Now just seems like an odd time to cut back on the workload.

It is hard to fathom that Koch was considered the polarising, controversial one. He’s either softened or Sam is that extreme that it makes Koch look placid now in comparison.

Agreed. Was thinking the same thing.

I don’t think it will affect the ratings but time will tell obviously.

ok im starting to notice a trend. on the weekends the melbourne viewers tend to top the most viewers for sunrise . and sydney is going today for the weekends , but during the week sydney tops the most viewers but not as much as in melbourne.

Annette’s article talks about a falling out between Pell and Sam after Sam complained about Nat and Koch. Do we know any more about this?

Is everyone else taking a pay cut still expected to work a five day week? What makes her so special?

On radio, some presenters are doing four days after their pay was cut.

It seems Seven have no idea of what logic means.

If Seven were really serious about cutting costs then the should get rid of their biggest financial liabilities like Armytage and Pell (plus Fergo from Seven News of course).

Put Nat as permanent host 5 days a week and have Mark Beretta host when Kochie’s off (Simon Reeve can cover him). Angela Cox to news.

I’d personally prefer Seven bring Mel back to Sunrise but that’s more or less a pipe dream.

I don’t get the big deal about her supposedly requesting to go 4 days a week… Can’t remember there being this much of an issue when Kochie did this.

There is some element of truth about inconsistency of presenters; However, Sunrise has a well known team so its not as though they will be putting people in the chair who are foreign to viewers.

It doesn’t quite work like that and is probably not wise. There are other ways they can save money without having impacts on the broadcast itself. For instance these positions are not needed and are wasting money in terms of Seven News: Dual presenters on weekends, weekend weather presenters, dual presenters on the GC to name a few…

Because Koch is the show’s biggest drawcard and has been in the role for more than double the years Armytage has? His loyalty to Seven and connection with the audience deserves consideration. The show would suffer without his presence, it wouldn’t if Armytage departed. There are any number of presenters capable of filling her role and the show wouldn’t miss a beat but it would be much harder to find someone to fill Koch’s shoes.

Agree with you that you don’t do cost-cutting by simply getting rid of people who have the most expensive contracts. However, all the other suggestions you made would directly impact the broadcast - something a network should try and do as much as possible when cutting costs

Because for Kochie it was viewed as the start of a transition towards retirement, and he has a valid reason for needing Fridays off to facilitate his other role.

For Sam it’s about getting a longer weekend on her farm.

Didn’t she kick up a massive stink when she was forced to take a 20 per cent pay cut, along with all the other big names at the network? So wouldn’t be surprised if this just flows from that. She has obviously had a win, while the rest of her colleagues continues to work their usual for less.

Mark Beretta wouldn’t be an adequate male co-presenter on Sunrise once David Koch retires? Beretts has been presenting Sport for over 15 years and is hardly foreign to Sunrise viewers, I’m sure most would be fine if he were to become a main co-presenter when Kochie retires.

As for what should happen if/when Sam Armytage decides to leave Sunrise, I’m sure most here would agree that it really should be the presenter who was robbed in 2013!

Realistically this won’t happen (especially in Perth where there’d probably be riots if Seven were to demote let alone sack one of Rick or Sue), but I personally think the idea of dual presenters in the smaller metro markets should be ditched on both weeknights and weekends if Seven are serious about cutting back costs. The ratings in Adelaide seem to suggest that viewers are remaining loyal to Seven News even with just one newsreader on weeknights.

They could probably get away with this in Adelaide & Perth, but the three largest markets probably still need weekend weather presenters for as long as Nine have them.

Really, I’m just imagining the “you need a forecast you can rely on every night of the week” type promos from Nine News (even if such spots would be pretty laughable in Sydney given the “barely any better than Tim Bailey” calibre of TCN’s forecasters) right now!

I remember that. If I remember correctly, Sunrise would run the show based off viewers’ opinions.

They should put Sam AND Kochie both on Mon-Thu and get Matt and Monique to host Fri-Sun.

Nat does news Mon - Thur, Sally does Fri - Sun and Ange Cox to Friday 11:30 and 4pm + weekend 5pm and The Latest.

Ideally they’d move Usher to Sydney 6pm weekdays and Mel Doyle to weekends.

Edwina focuses on entertainment, filing packages for the weekend.
