Sunrise (2015-Sept 2020)

The truth of the matter is sometimes you only get an interview because a star wants to talk about something specific. I don’t really see the harm in talking about her career as a whole as long as you talk about the reason she’s on (which I understand Sunrise did), there has to be some give and take. I’m not defending the skit though but only because she didn’t know about it. We’ve done skits with stars on Studio 10 but we have always done it with the blessing of the star and talked to them (and even rehearsed it with them) beforehand.

I don’t think Sam deserves this hatred that’s been thrown at her. It was a bad call by the producers, we’ve all made bad calls (I’ve certainly made my fair share).

I never said Sam was the person at fault. I agree with others though that this was poor form, and apparently the apology was half-done too - the quote from Kochie almost seems to imply that Davis should lighten up. On the other hand, I think Kochie should realise that some people aren’t always going to go on brekky TV for a laugh. The world isn’t all smiles and giggles, and Sunrise should, when getting guests with serious topics in, treat the seriousness of issues like poverty and refugees with the respect it deserves.

Sunrise (and Today, to a lesser extent) seems to have an annoying tendency to make anything into a joke or easily shareable piece of social media fodder, and I feel it’s a big reason why the ratings are down of late.

I’ve really enjoyed WS this weekend. Angela Cox has fit in well, as has Sally Bowrey. They had a segment yesterday called something like ‘Better Get Bowrey’ as well as using her throughout the show for entertainment. Today she did an interview with Helen Wellings about internet purchasing. Generally the show flows well and the segments are good. AOK did an excellent interview with Bill Shorten. Great questioning, but still with a respectful tone.
If Michael Pell did one thing right, it was Weekend Sunrise. The new segments for the hosts and Sally are perfect and the additional of Angela Cox and Sally Bowrey has improved the show enormously. HOWEVER, this is the third Saturday that Today has beaten Weekend Sunrise. Usually, Weekend Sunrise is leaps and bounds ahead, with Today have a few wins in its tenure, but IIRC it has never lost consecutively .

Virginia Haussegger certainly came out firing today about the ‘Sunrise bimbo brigade’.

By all means she is entitled to make her point but is it helpful to start name calling them bimbos?

Just catching up with the relaunch now.

Those graphics are horrible, so hard to read. The news desk area feels cold and temporary.

i know! I saw that article , i thought she was pretty horrible to suggest that they are bimbos! That was way out of line.

Sunrise are entitled to be treated fairly , and they did make a mistake, and let’s face it Sunrise has had a few dud interviews over the years (Michael Richards anyone?). I hardly thought Virginia’s article was actually helpful in anyway. As soon as i saw Bimbo in the main headline… and in the article… i thought wow you lost me.

As for the skit - yes it was pretty bad - but this is what Sunrise does - and yes maybe they should have warned her that they were going to do it. Everyone makes mistake, it’s hard to get interviews right and you never know what reaction you are going to get to the questions. I didn’t like the skit and i felt it detracted from the interview about the cause, but this is what i expect from Sunrise now. It’s really hard to take it as a serious news breakfast show.

I have been dying to comment on this, but my old account is playing silly buggers! Finally got a chance too!

Yawn. Fairfax trying to out-feminism everyone else, as usual. With a pathetically transparent faux-outrage article.

It it just me or does Nat look like she doesn’t even want to be there (anymore)?

Almost all of headlines/story introductions look like she’s half asleep.

And she finishes her live-crosses with a ‘confused’:

“Okay… Yep… Thanks for that - Michelle…”

“Mmkay… Thanks Sophie… for that”

And Sam’s new camera-angle crosses to Nat look so awkward:

“Ohhkayy… Time now… For the news - with Nat…”

Wonder what others think?

I think Nat has had enough. She doesn’t look like she wants to be there.

If I were her I would be very pissed by the new format as well. It pretty much takes away her role as the news person. If a big story happens now Sam and Kochie take it on.

Her role is really superficial now.

Spot on article IMO.

Say whatever you want about morning television and Sunrise - it isn’t nearly as empowering and intelligent as it claims to be.
Did you read the article? Or is this just the whole ‘PC-culture gone mad!’ spiel which the right seems to be trotting out a lot nowadays? The writer has experience in TV news and the environment within it. She has more of a right to speak out against what she sees as a culture problem in the media than any random on the internet has a right to brand anything as ‘faux-outrage’.

if you think Sunrise (or Today) is empowering for women or treats them with respect, I suggest you think long and hard about what sort of roles women get, how they’re represented and exactly which women become successful in the television industry. As someone who knows quite a few women pursuing a job in the media, let me tell you that TV in particular looks for a a very narrow set of ‘traits’ when hiring women for on-air roles. These issues are probably lesser in other mediums, but TV absolutely has a ‘bimbo problem’.

Yep. I would be quite pissed if I was her with the new format. Been there for so long and her role reduced as the odd headline woman, who has a camera shoved in her side at introductions for Kochie or Sam.

BTW:
Sam’s Response to the whole Kristen Situation and “vile criticism”:

I have to agree with this post and indeed what was said by Virginia Haussegger in that article for Fairfax.

As for the other comments about Natalie Barr’s current role on the program, you have to wonder how long she’ll continue with the program considering that it seems she’s getting considerably less airtime than in the past. Of course, I also think that Nat definitely should’ve been the successor to Mel instead of Sam but that’s another story…
Nat does that when she doesn’t care, a good characteristic of hers IMO. However, they have been becoming more noticeable and more regular, use to be during Kochie’s Finance Reports which was funny but during the news is not where it belongs.

The new format is , as others have mentioned above, making her role as the newsreader more irrelevant. I too @SydneyCityTV think that Nat was a worthy, very capable and a well deserved recipient to replace Mel when she decided to leave and host Sunrise. And with the ratings on a downward spiral , its probably time to get rid of another presenter  But the burning question is, what for Nat post Sunrise? Late news, weekend 6pm Sydney newsreader?

That Sex and the City skit was under scrutiny on tonight’s Media Watch. UNHCR said (in a letter to Media Watch) that it was expecting the presenters would ask Kristin a series of questions on her charity work and Sex and the City, therefore the body was surprised and disappointed with the skit.

Have to agree with the Nat talk however this morning (at least at the 7.30 half hour) the format had returned to that of old - straight to Nat and then Berrets. Not sure about the rest of the show?!

It seems at 6.30am, 7.30am, 8.30am and 9am you are guaranteed the good format. But at the other intervals it is anyone’s guess. Half the time Nat and Beretts don’t even need to be sitting at the desk. It just looks weird.
