A blatant promo for Qantas. Seven should have the announcement ‘The following segment is a paid presentation’ before all of the sponsored reports on Sunrise.

Cool your jets.

The Australian Olympic Team launch was at Qantas HQ this morning, hence 7’s presence as Australian broadcaster. And hence the presence of several other media outlets there as well.

There was nothing sponsored about it.

Having the Qantas plane in the background was a coincidence.

Well at the QANTAS HQ, there’s bound to be a few planes lying about.

The camera op (rightly) thought it would add a sense of where they are and also m looks visually impressive.

Hope this is the right thread

Here’s both a laugh and a blast from the past. I stumbled across these old YouTube videos from 2005-07 from sketch show Comedy Inc on Nine (later repeated on The Comedy Channel), showing sketch’s from Mel and Kochie. I think they’re pretty funny (but that may be just me). The guy who played Kochie is very funny. Here’s a couple of links if anyone is interested.

I was only aged 5-7 at the time, does anyone (McKnight?) know how these sketch’s came about (as surely Today back then would’ve been funnier to mock IMO). Did Sunrise give them the OK? Did Sunrise like it?

Good you found some actual funny scenes from that program as it was generally unfunny. My sisters and I used to call it Comedy Stink.

Does Koch still tell a borderline joke every morning?

Unfortunately no, Pell dropped it not long after taking over in 2011 (Kochie was not happy):

I’m personally not a fan of Pell, as he got rid of a lot of things that made the show what it is (Joke of the Day, Soapbox, Mel).

I’m sure Today are glad there aren’t any similar sketch comedy programs on TV these days, because I could imagine one tearing the current incarnation of Today to shreds in a send-up! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Paul McCarthy did his impersonation of Kochie at the 2007 Logies and IIRC, the real Kochie & Mel saw the funny side.

Pell is very lucky to have inherited that show.

While elements of the older versions of Sunrise were iconic and much loved by all, has the show suffered? No, not really. Yes, breakfast TV numbers are down compared to what they used to be but FTA numbers are dropping across the board.

One could argue that Pell probably changed elements of the show (perhaps for the better) due to changing viewer habits/ preferences.

In all, the essence of the original concept of Sunrise is still there… same team, same format, same ‘family’ approach.

It was in their nature to laugh at themselves- so I would say that those sketches wouldn’t have been a problem whatsoever.

Good to see today’s weather done out in the plaza. Wish they used it more often.

On another note, is it just me, or is that fact the news flipper disappears to allow full screen graphics (such as transcripts of phones calls) annoying. The full screen graphics should be better planned so the news flipper stays on screen as often as possible.
