Sunday night delivered one of the closest results this year as the new season of MasterChef debuted albeit in tragic circumstances.

Seven took out the night with a 2-point win from Nine that was 1 point ahead of third-placed 10 while 10’s main channel ranked second for the night.

It was 10’s best result in more than a year with Seven, Nine and ABC down week-on-week though audience numbers were still high across all networks.

To start the night Seven News posted its first one million audience for a Sunday bulletin to rank number one while Nine News was up 40k as well.

MasterChef ranked third with 761,000 metro viewers. That compares to 545,000 for last year’s launch episode and 670,000 in 2021 while 1.22 million watched in 2020 for the returning contestant season and 715,000 in 2019. It was the highest rated episode outside a final since 2020.

MasterChef followed The Project special Tribute To Jock that did well to top 600k across the hour. Earlier 10 News got a boost especially at 6pm leading into the special to outrate the 5pm part of the bulletin.

Meanwhile Farmer Wants a Wife posted its highest audience since the launch episode this season while Lego Masters penultimate episode of the season was a season high up 20k from the previous week.

For ABC, Grand Designs was down +70k while Midsomer Murders took a hit as well, down 40k though the repeat special that followed managed to make the top 20.

7News Spotlight was ahead of 60 Minutes for the third week in a row with both results even with the previous week.

AFL’s number was up 100k from the previous week in the afternoon while the NRL Magic round concluded, down 30k week-on-week.

Weekend Sunrise did well to rank 16th.

Wow. That’s huge for The Project.

Huge numbers for The Project (tribute to Jock). The MasterChef Launch did very well too.

A close night for the three main channels.

Big audience for The Project tribute to Jock and also the new season premiere of MasterChef.

Very low audience for the BBC special The Coronation: A Day to Remember on SBS last night (highlights of the big day plus interviews with some of the people involved). It was the only Coronation-related program to air on SBS on the weekend.

Impressive numbers for 10 in horrible circumstances. I wonder if The Project could work in this format every Sunday/two presenter style with focus on one topic/interview over the whole hour?

Great numbers for The Project and MasterChef.

10 News First @ 6pm rated higher than the the 5pm hour.

Well done to Network Ten with 2 entries for their News into the Top 20!

It will be interesting to see if Stan Grant’s much publicised offensive comments have any impact on Q&A’s ratings tonight.

Q&A’s ratings haven’t been great anyway, IIRC

True.

The comments dont seem to have affected the ratings of Insiders too much

Its good they didnt split The Project into rating segments. That wouldve come across a little insensitive.
Much deserved boost for the network after a tragic week and boosting the shows before Project and after Masterchef.

Wow. Huge audience for The Project. Can’t remember the last time the show rated that well. Was that a combined figure for the full hour?

Good launch for Masterchef. Thought it’d be a little higher though.

Not a good night for Nine News. Lost in each city.

Really good numbers for the Jock special and the Masterchef premiere. I reckon MasterChef probably got a 100-150k boost from what it would have if it launched last week.

I like this idea. It would give 10 a chance to do more in-depth reporting. The format of last night’s was done so well.

Networks need to move on from the Royals, outside of big events they don’t rate. And all the big events are now over, we are heading into a lull period now with all deaths, Harry dramas, weddings, coronations, etc etc have been cycled out. The only really big events going forward would be more damning reports with Andrew or a Harry divorce.

One of 10’s best weekends. The Project and MasterChef rated well (Vale, Jock) on Sunday night

Agree. Give The Project a bit more room to breathe. Perhaps a 60 mins lite would suit a couple of stories with a bit more depth… perhaps even keeping the panel for the “news” and a bit of discussion but then cut over to a single presenter standing to do the deep dive stories.

Some episodes in 2013 got over 600k across the hour (single coding then). In 2014 there was the split coding but across the hour episodes were below 500k.
