The first day of the ratings period saw Nine take out the Sunday night by a near 10 point margin over Seven that was saw its main channel pushed to third by ABC. Nine and Seven’s network shares were down by one each with ABC up by almost two. 10 was steady and SBS was down slightly.

All three reality shows posted season highs with Married At First Sight easily the winner as well as being the number one show for the night and up almost 100k from the previous Sunday. Following was 60 Minutes with another big audience though down 90k from the previous week.

Seven’s night started with a win at 6pm though Seven News Sunday posted its lowest audience of the year. The start of the Top 50 Week saw Idol up 20k from the last Sunday episode while the Abba V Queen repeat had 201k. Hard to believe that this was Seven’s post reality Sunday night offering.

The new season of Death In Paradise was the number two entertainment show of the night for ABC. Combined with a Vera repeat and Farewell Doc Martin special it saw ABC’s main channel second for the night.

Australian Survivor also hit a season high, up 60,000 on the previous week to be 10’s best show of the night. The Project and 10 News also made the top 20.

SBS got a rare entry in the top ranked shows with Ancient Egypt By Train.

Weekend Sunrise slipped below 200k for the first time on a Sunday this year but was still well ahead of Weekend Today that missed the top 20.

Preseason NRL gave Foxtel some good results.

Huge numbers for MAFS last night - It’s audience is even still growing week on week and getting very close to that magic million.

Idol and Survivor still jumping back and forth in the 400ks. Survivor may have got a slight lift due to a highly promoted Tribal Council.

Tonight will be really telling for Idol - Seven would definitely be hoping for a lift with the studio performances and return of Marcia.

It’s the first time all season that arriving at work this morning, the conversation has only been about Survivor. So great to see this format kicking goals.

Who? Is what most people will be saying. Who is the market that seven are aiming at? The youth watching are too young to have watched the first season on Ten all those years ago, the ones that did have moved away from this format!

Seven are aiming at who with this show? It’s all over the place and the ratings are showing that perfectly!

It will be interesting to see the 15-minute breakdowns between 8.30pm and 9.15pm, given most of Survivor’s tribal council action was up against 60 Minutes.

Vera got pretty close to 60 Minutes even though it was a repeat episode.

To be fair overall Idol and Survivor have been pretty much on par (in overnight ratings), each being very close and beating the other on different nights. Also I believe this would likely be the lowest rating Aus Survivor seasons on Ten.

Fail to see how an extra 100/200k people will just tune in tonight.

For anything live they would have surely hoped for minimum 800k. I’d be adjusting that down to around 500k. Wouldn’t surprise me if they even went backwards tonight.

60 minutes not sure if you call that a good or bad result. Anything Epstein related doesn’t work, the Pink story I found interesting.

Big night for Married at First Sight.

But sad that the first night of the official ratings season, and a Sunday, had 6 shows under 200k.

It might only be on par as normal seasons, but this season there is more conversations in the work place than normal, as more people talk about it, it could increase the numbers.

It’s hard “could” but it has happened before.

453k for was Idol’s best result for the season (so far). But at the same time it’s the biggest gap between Idol & Survivor.

And Idol is fourth in its timeslot and not in the top 5 in demos.

The question that Seven should be asking themselves is: ‘If 10 were so successful in their revival of Survivor and Nine were so successful in the revival of The Block, why aren’t we having any successes with Idol or Big Brother and co?’

The answer should be quite straightforward: Because you immediately bloat out the episodes and mess around with what made it work from the get-go. Granted Idol is better than the mess Big Brother (if you can call it that)’s become but it doesn’t help the fact that what could’ve started at around the 700K mark is lingering barely at the 400K mark and no one is caring for it as much as the other two.

Might be wrong
but doesn’t MAFS usually weaken mid season?

You are wrong.

Looking at the past couple seasons - the ratings are pretty consistent. If anything it usually gains a bit of momentum a few weeks in, then sustains that until it peaks at the end.

Vera (even if repeats) is a real chance of overtaking 60 Minutes to be the top 8:30pm / later Sunday show, what a result the ABC had last night

The issue with your question and contention is it ignores that Seven had some success with not only revivals (e.g., Farmer Wants a Wife) but tinkering with a tentpole’s format (e.g., The Voice).

Seven took a big risk launching Idol against MAFS as almost anything up against it in recent times has struggled. It probably would have done better if it launched after Easter, although it’s much easier to say that in hindsight. It was a risk that was worth taking IMO as they can’t just accept defeat. Some things will work and some won’t - that’s just the TV industry.

Survivor has enough of a committed fanbase and is one of the shows that has done OK up against MAFS. Whilst the numbers for Survivor aren’t amazing, Ten would be pleased that it’s at least doing better than their other recent reality formats. Hopefully it’s a bit of a kick start to the year to give them a better lead into I’m a Celeb.

Even these already started to slide and the latter had that big boost from the Olympics, as well as being against Nine’s weaker shows of the year. If they’re against any part of Married or Block, they’d crumble. Surely Seven know this and would be doing everything they can to make them the best they can and completely avoid Q1 and Q4 - combined with the AFL and general programming being up with winter and est time zones, Q2 and Q3 need to somehow be Seven’s weapons in 2023, especially with no Olympics or Comm Games this time.
